Paramount confirmed the project at CinemaCon on April 16, 2026, naming Tom Cruise and producer Jerry Bruckheimer as returnees. The studio has not announced a release date, plot, director, or additional returning cast members.
What Paramount has confirmed
Paramount Pictures co-chair Josh Greenstein confirmed the sequel to Top Gun: Maverick at CinemaCon. The Los Angeles Times reported that the film was in development with a script underway and that Cruise and Bruckheimer would reunite on the project. This is a formal studio update, not a production-start announcement. Paramount’s statement establishes that the project has moved into development and that a script is underway; it does not establish that filming has begun.
Who is returning—and what is not confirmed
Tom Cruise and Jerry Bruckheimer are the two people named in the studio update. Paramount’s official Top Gun: Maverick page identifies Cruise as Pete “Maverick” Mitchell. The reports available do not confirm a broader cast list, so it would be premature to treat other Maverick actors as signed on.

Jay Ellis, who played Payback in Top Gun: Maverick, offered a brief update in a red-carpet interview with Entertainment Tonight, reported by CinemaBlend on June 3, 2026: “We’re making baby steps, I would say. There is a script, I think it’s been announced that there is a script.” Ellis’s comments are his characterization of progress, not a separate studio announcement or a confirmation of his own return.
When will Top Gun 3 be released?
No release date has been announced in the cited reports. TheWrap’s April 16, 2026 CinemaCon coverage said Paramount offered no further specifics. Without a release date or production schedule, there is no reliable basis for estimating when the film will reach theaters.

What is known about the story?
Paramount has not released a plot synopsis for the third film. The confirmation establishes a sequel to Top Gun: Maverick, but provides no verified story details. Any claims about characters’ next missions or how the film will continue the previous story remain speculation.

Paramount’s 2026 anniversary article says Top Gun: Maverick earned more than $1.5 billion worldwide, calls it the No. 1 film of 2022, and describes it as Paramount Pictures’ highest-grossing movie. Those are the studio’s figures and characterizations. The film opened in June 2022, according to the Los Angeles Times; the April 2026 sequel announcement was nearly four years later by calendar, not three.
