Host Padma Lakshmi said the production had not known about the allegations while filming and urged an investigation. Later reporting described a producer response that reshooting would be unfair to the other contestants; it also said Bravo had not issued a public statement as of September 2021.
Why the season 18 win prompted criticism
The reaction followed the season finale, not a finding made during the competition. Reports about Erales’s firing from Comedor and his treatment of an employee became public around the time of his win, leading viewers to question the show’s decision and response. Eater Austin’s initial reporting noted that online discussion had not yet included an official, specific accuser; it separately reported the restaurant partner’s account and Erales’s own statements. Anonymous online claims should not be treated as established facts. Eater Austin’s July 2021 report.
Criticism also touched the story the season had told about kitchens. TIME writers differed in their assessment of the cooking outcome, while noting that Erales’s win complicated the season’s portrayal of supportive kitchen environments. That was commentary on the season’s narrative, not evidence of a consensus among chefs or fans. TIME’s finale commentary.

What Padma Lakshmi said about the allegations
Lakshmi said the show had not known about the allegations during filming and called for them to be investigated. TheWrap reported her July 2, 2021 statement: “As someone who has been sexually harassed, this topic is a serious one and merits openness.” She added: “We filmed Top Chef in October of last year & were not aware of the allegations now coming out about Gabe. This should be investigated & the network should consider its best action.” TheWrap’s report.

What Erales and Comedor said
Comedor’s partner described Erales’s firing in terms of policy violations and conduct at odds with the restaurant’s values, while later coverage reported the employer’s characterization of harassment. Erales acknowledged having a consensual relationship with a staff member and said he reduced her hours afterward. In a statement to the Austin American-Statesman quoted by TheWrap, he said his managerial decisions affecting the employee “were found to be discriminatory” and that he realized they “were bad decisions.” TheWrap, July 2, 2021.

In his July 23 apology, Erales again acknowledged reducing the employee’s hours, calling it a “poor judgment call.” He also described steps toward personal and professional change. The apology is an acknowledgment by Erales; it does not by itself resolve every claim or establish what any later investigation found. TheWrap’s report on the apology.

In September 2021, Eater Houston reported two distinct points: Bravo had not issued a statement on the allegations as of September 22, and Magical Elves executives said they did not condone Erales’s behavior but considered reshooting unfair to the other contestants. The reshooting explanation was attributed to the production company’s executives, not presented as a statement from Lakshmi or as a current Bravo position. Eater Houston.

What the criticism does—and does not—establish
- The public backlash followed the finale and reporting about Erales’s departure from Comedor and his conduct toward an employee.
- Lakshmi said the show had been unaware during filming and called for investigation and network action; that is her account, not an independently verified account of every production participant’s knowledge.
- Erales acknowledged the relationship and the reduction in the employee’s hours, and later apologized for that managerial decision.
- Reporting on the production response and the absence of a Bravo statement is dated to September 2021. It should not be read as a description of the network’s position today.
- The season’s supportive-kitchen storyline became part of commentary about the win, but the cited coverage does not measure how widely that view was shared.
