“Korean anime” is often used as shorthand for animation made in Korea, but these films are not one genre—or all made for children. This editorial selection spans adult-oriented social dramas, horror, science fiction, stop motion, family stories and a landmark from the 1970s. It is organized by audience and viewing interest, not by an official or consensus ranking: Korean Film Council sources identify the works and their significance but do not rank them against one another.

Which Korean animated film should you start with?

Choose by tone and audience rather than assuming Korean animation has a single style. For mature viewers interested in social conflict, start with The King of Pigs; for body horror, try Beauty Water. Wonderful Days is the science-fiction pick, Leafie, A Hen into the Wild suits a family-adventure mood, and Mother Land offers stop-motion animation. The list below gives more context for each.

10 Korean animated films to know

1. The King of Pigs (2011) — mature social thriller

Yeon Sang-ho’s feature follows former classmates whose memories return to school bullying and violence. The Korean Film Council (KOFIC) lists it as a 96-minute Korean-language film released November 3, 2011, and rates it 19. It is a mature drama, not a children’s recommendation. KOFIC’s film record provides the release and classification details.

2. The Fake (2013) — socially critical adult animation

KOFIC’s April 3, 2026 overview names The Fake among representative adult-oriented Korean animated works. That makes it a useful choice for viewers exploring animation beyond family entertainment. The cited overview establishes its place in that context, but does not provide enough title-specific detail here to describe its plot or current viewing options. Read KOFIC’s 2026 overview.

3. The Senior Class — socially engaged adult animation

The Senior Class also appears in KOFIC’s April 3, 2026 overview of adult-oriented, socially critical Korean animation. It belongs on a shortlist for viewers interested in that strand of the industry, though the cited overview does not establish the release year or detailed story information. KOFIC’s overview is the source for its inclusion.

4. Beauty Water (2020) — body horror

This animated horror-thriller centers on a woman who uses a substance that lets her reshape her appearance; the premise turns into body horror. KOFIC records an 85-minute running time and a September 9, 2020 release. It is a strong pick for adult viewers looking for unsettling genre animation rather than a family film. See KOFIC’s film record.

5. My Beautiful Girl, Mari (2002) — dreamlike fantasy

KOFIC highlights this film’s surreal dream journey and distinctive visual style. It also won the Grand Prize at the Annecy International Animation Film Festival in 2002, a significant international recognition for Korean animation. Choose it for an atmospheric, visually led experience rather than a conventional action-driven story. KOFIC discusses the film and its recognition.

6. Wonderful Days (2003) — science fiction and hybrid technique

This science-fiction feature is notable for how it built its visual world: KOFIC says its backgrounds combined CGI and real miniatures, while its characters were traditionally animated. That mix makes it an especially interesting choice for viewers curious about animation technique as well as speculative settings. See KOFIC’s account of its production approach.

7. Leafie, A Hen into the Wild (2011) — family adventure

Leafie escapes confinement and embarks on a journey into motherhood. KOFIC describes the film as appealing to children and parents and as a major Korean animation success. A July 14, 2023 KOFIC/KoBiz article reported 2.2 million viewers for the film in summer 2011; that is a historical figure reported by the source, not a current audience total. Read KOFIC’s feature on Korean animation.

8. Mother Land (2022) — stop-motion and an Arctic journey

In this stop-motion feature, a girl in the Siberian tundra seeks a legendary red bear in hopes of saving her ill mother. KOFIC identifies Park Jae-beom as the director and reports that he received the Wildflowers Film Award for Best New Director. Its handmade animation and urgent family quest offer a different experience from the computer-generated and traditionally drawn films elsewhere on this list. KOFIC’s overview covers the film and director.

9. Heartsping: Teenieping of Love (2024) — a series-based family feature

Based on the Catch! Teenieping series, this feature centers on Princess Romi and emotion-linked creatures. KOFIC reports that it particularly attracted children while also drawing older viewers. Its theatrical release began August 7, 2024; a KOFIC/KoBiz article dated September 6, 2024 reported 880,000 admissions since release and a 600,000-viewer break-even point. Those are figures reported at that time, not current totals. See the September 2024 KOFIC/KoBiz article.

10. Robot Taekwon V (1976) — a historical pick

KOFIC lists Robot Taekwon V among South Korean theatrical animated films from the 1970s. Its value on this list is historical: it offers a look at an earlier period of the country’s animation industry, rather than a guarantee that its style or storytelling will appeal to every contemporary viewer. KOFIC’s overview provides the historical context.
