Winter in games can be a threat to outlast, a world to explore, or simply a reason to settle into a gentler seasonal routine. These ten picks span all three: The Long Dark and Frostpunk 2 make cold central to survival, while the others offer snowy landscapes, northern folklore, or a seasonal atmosphere. This is a mood-led selection, not an objective ranking; some games are winter-focused, while others include winter as one part of a larger experience.
Winter as a survival challenge
The Long Dark: one survivor against the cold
For a game where winter is the central challenge, start with The Long Dark. Hinterland Studio describes it as a solo exploration-survival experience in a frozen wilderness after a geomagnetic disaster. Its official page highlights changing time and weather, wildlife, and scarce resources—all elements that make the environment more than a snowy backdrop. Hinterland describes the setting as a 50-square-kilometre Northern Canadian wilderness; that figure comes from the studio’s undated official page, accessed in 2026.
The appeal is the scale of the struggle: one person must think and adapt in an exposed landscape. Hinterland’s description captures the premise: “The Long Dark is a thoughtful, exploration-survival experience that challenges solo players to think for themselves as they explore an expansive frozen wilderness in the aftermath of a geomagnetic disaster.” Hinterland Studio’s official game page
Frostpunk 2: a city trying to endure
Frostpunk 2 shifts the winter-survival problem from an individual to a society. Its snowy, post-apocalyptic setting puts the survival of a city—and tensions among the people within it—at the centre. Where The Long Dark asks how one survivor can get through the wilderness, Frostpunk 2 asks how a population can make it through a persistent winter. Xbox’s official store page and Epic Games Store page describe the game and its setting.

Winter as a world to explore
The Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim: a snowy fantasy landscape
Skyrim belongs on a winter list for its snowy northern fantasy atmosphere. It is not a game about surviving winter as a single, continuous mechanic; the cold is part of a much broader adventure. Choose it when the draw is roaming through a large fantasy world with winter scenery rather than facing a focused survival test.
Celeste: the mountain ascent
Celeste brings winter’s drama to a mountain-climbing journey. Its snowy atmosphere makes the ascent feel stark and demanding, a good fit if you want a compact adventure shaped by the image of climbing into a cold landscape. It is included here for that mountain-and-winter mood, not because its whole world is a winter survival simulation.
Rank #2
- A META-COOPERATIVE SURVIVAL EXPERIENCE: Step into a world where humanity teeters on the brink of extinction. Dead of Winter immerses players in a small colony of survivors facing flesh-craving monsters and the unforgiving winter cold.
- PSYCHOLOGICAL SURVIVAL: Delve into a story-centric game. Survivors grapple with personal psychological imperatives. Collaboration is crucial to fend off external threats, resolve crises, scavenge for supplies, and maintain the colony's fragile morale.
- STRATEGIC DECISIONS: Frequent challenging decisions require you to weigh the greater good of the colony against personal interests. The survival of the colony, the battle against the undead, and the dynamics among survivors all hang in the balance.
- COOPERATION AMIDST CHAOS: While coping with their own psychological burdens, players must find ways to cooperate, defend against external dangers, and ensure the colony's survival. Trust is a rare commodity in a world gone mad.
- UNIQUE CHARACTERS: Dozens of unique characters each have their own stories and motivations. Experience an emergent narrative. Navigate wildly-varying decisions, ensuring that no two games are alike. But beware, as a betrayer may lurk within your ranks.
Röki: folklore in a forgotten northern world
Röki takes a more folkloric route: Nintendo describes it as an adventure through a forgotten northern world of mystery and monsters. That makes it a natural choice for players looking for winter wonder mixed with unease, rather than a realistic account of enduring the cold.
Kona: a colder, more mysterious option
Kona offers a colder, more mysterious mood within this selection. It suits a reader who wants winter to colour an investigation or an isolated setting, though the evidence supporting this list does not establish how much of the game is snowy. Treat it as a winter-atmosphere pick rather than a claim that the entire game takes place in winter.

The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt: winter within a darker fantasy journey
The Witcher 3 is a broader fantasy journey, not a wholly winter-set game. Its place here is for players seeking a darker fantasy world that includes cold-weather scenery; Nintendo’s inclusion in a winter-game feature is a useful lead, not proof that snow defines the whole adventure. Check the current official game description for the edition and platform you plan to play.
Winter as a gentler seasonal mood
Stardew Valley: a change of season
Stardew Valley offers a softer contrast to survival and mystery: winter as one season in a larger, gentler game. It is a suitable pick if you want the feeling of a seasonal reset rather than a world built around constant danger. Nintendo includes it in its winter selection, but the winter theme is only one part of the experience.

Animal Crossing: New Horizons: low-pressure seasonal play
Animal Crossing: New Horizons rounds out the list with an easygoing seasonal atmosphere. Its winter appeal is about the pleasure of spending time in a familiar world through a colder season, rather than overcoming a harsh wilderness or governing a city in crisis. Nintendo lists it among its wintery game suggestions.

How to choose—and check availability
Decide first whether you want cold to be a core survival pressure or a backdrop to exploration and seasonal play. The first two games are the clearest choices if winter itself should drive the challenge. The remaining titles suit different moods, but Nintendo’s winter feature is a candidate list rather than a ranking or a current storefront inventory.
