Forbes’ 2019 ranking named Dwayne Johnson the year’s highest-paid actor, with estimated earnings of $89.4 million. It did not rank actors by total net worth: the figures cover income over a single year, not accumulated assets minus liabilities. Here is the supported 2019 earnings list, with that distinction made clear.
What the 2019 ranking measures—and what it does not
Forbes published its ranking on August 26, 2019, using estimated earnings from June 1, 2018, through June 1, 2019. The estimates drew on Nielsen, ComScore, Box Office Mojo, IMDb, and interviews with industry insiders. Forbes described the totals as pretax and said they exclude fees for agents, managers, and lawyers, which it characterized as generally 10%, 15%, and 5%, respectively. These are estimates, not audited take-home pay. Forbes’ methodology and ranking.

Because the figures cover one measurement period, they cannot establish who had the greatest accumulated wealth. A person’s net worth depends on assets and liabilities, not just income earned in one year. A comparable, source-supported 2019 top ten by total net worth is not established here, so the earnings list should not be presented as a “richest actors” ranking.

The amounts below are Forbes’ estimated earnings in U.S. dollars for the stated twelve-month period—not net-worth estimates. The ranking has a tie at sixth place, so it includes ten people while skipping seventh place.

How film and other deals shaped the reported earnings
Dwayne Johnson
Forbes reported that Johnson’s earnings included film compensation, television pay, and royalties tied to an Under Armour line of clothing, shoes, and headphones. The article also reported that he could receive an upfront salary of up to $23.5 million for the forthcoming Jumanji: The Next Level, plus up to 15% of the “pool” from some franchise films. Those are historical terms reported in 2019, not current rates. Forbes’ 2019 account.
Rank #2
Robert Downey Jr. and the Avengers performers
Forbes reported that Downey received $20 million upfront and nearly 8% of the pool for Avengers: Endgame, estimating his film compensation at about $55 million. Forbes reported the film’s gross as $2.796 billion. These are article-era reported figures, not general pay rates. Forbes’ report on the earnings.
Forbes also said the four Avengers: Endgame performers appearing on its 2019 list—Downey, Hemsworth, Cooper, and Rudd—earned a combined $284 million, most of it from the franchise. That helps explain the franchise’s weight in the annual ranking; it does not measure their wealth.

Why annual pay and net worth are different questions
A ranking of annual earnings compares income over a defined period. Net worth instead concerns the value of what someone owns minus what they owe, which is a different calculation and requires a separate, comparable evidence base. Forbes’ list is useful for identifying which actors earned the most during its 2018–19 window, but it cannot answer who was richest overall in 2019.
Forbes quoted entertainment lawyer David Chidekel of Early Sullivan Wright Gizer & McRae describing how leading stars could negotiate large compensation packages for major studio films: “Celebrities such as Downey and (Scarlett) Johansson currently have extreme leverage to demand enormous compensation packages from studios investing hundreds of millions of dollars in making tent-pole films, such as The Avengers series.” The comment offers context for blockbuster compensation, not evidence of any actor’s total net worth. Chidekel’s comment as quoted by Forbes in 2019.
Rank #4
Johnson, whom the Forbes article identified as “the Rock,” told Forbes in 2018: “It has to be audience first. What does the audience want, and what is the best scenario that we can create that will send them home happy?” The remark reflects his stated approach to entertainment, not a claim about his finances. Johnson’s statement, quoted by Forbes.
