This is a fantasy crossover roster drawn from books, films, games and other fictional worlds with magical or extraordinary abilities—not a claim that one franchise’s rules apply to every other. The picks below earn their places by filling different jobs: leadership, defense, scouting, practical survival, healing and adaptable magic. The ranking is subjective entertainment, not a proven survival formula.
For a fair comparison, assume a familiar outbreak: zombies are dangerous, persistent and infectious; ordinary weapons and sensible precautions work; magic can help, but it does not automatically cure every infection or make anyone invulnerable. Each character brings the abilities and temperament they are known for in their own story, with the caveat that cross-world powers may not transfer perfectly.
How this team is chosen
A group made entirely of champions might win a fight and still lose to hunger, infection, bad decisions or internal conflict. The list favors complementary roles rather than ten versions of the strongest combatant. The premise has appeared in earlier fictional-character and The Walking Dead-specific lists, but this roster treats fantasy crossover skills and practical team balance as the point of the exercise. Zombie Apocalypse Monthly’s 2018 list and ComicBook.com’s 2017 list of Walking Dead characters are precedents for the playful format, not authoritative rankings.
These choices are deliberately drawn from fantasy fiction rather than real-world survival expertise. Their effectiveness depends on the assumed outbreak rules above; a setting where zombies cannot be harmed by ordinary means, or where magic cures any bite, would change the roster.

The 10 characters
1. Gandalf — Leadership and perspective
Gandalf is the team’s counselor and decision-maker, not simply its biggest weapon. He can recognize when a fight is avoidable, persuade people to cooperate, and keep a frightened group focused on a larger goal. His experience and magic offer protection in a crisis, but he is not an always-present solution: he can be absent, constrained by the events around him, and should not be treated as a limitless source of power.
2. Hermione Granger — Research and adaptable problem-solving
Hermione brings a disciplined mind, a deep knowledge of spells and the ability to improvise with what is available. That combination suits unfamiliar threats: she can investigate how a danger works, organize information and help the group devise a response instead of charging blindly. Her knowledge is not the same as medical training, and spells cannot be assumed to cure zombie infection under these rules.

3. Aragorn — Field leadership and tracking
Aragorn is a practical field leader who can read terrain, track movement and guide people through dangerous country. He combines combat skill with patience and sound judgment, qualities that matter when the safest route is more valuable than a dramatic victory. He is still one person with finite strength; the team must not rely on him to scout, protect and lead every task at once.
4. Samwise Gamgee — Food, stamina and morale
Sam is the roster’s steady survivor: loyal, resourceful and capable of continuing when conditions are miserable. His care for others makes him valuable in a group where fear and exhaustion can be as destabilizing as the dead. He is not a specialist fighter, so his contribution is strongest when paired with people who can protect the group while he helps sustain it.

5. Geralt of Rivia — Threat assessment and close defense
Geralt’s experience hunting dangerous creatures gives him a useful habit: study the threat, prepare, then act. He is a formidable defender when a close encounter cannot be avoided, and his knowledge of monsters encourages caution rather than bravado. But zombies are not automatically the same as the supernatural beings he fights, and his expertise does not guarantee a quick answer to a new infection or an overwhelming crowd.
6. Legolas — Scouting and ranged defense
Legolas offers keen senses, mobility and ranged combat, making him a natural scout and an effective guard against threats that can be spotted before they reach camp. His abilities could help the group assess a route without immediately exposing everyone. Arrows and attention are finite, however, and no scout can watch every direction or make an unsafe destination safe.

7. Princess Mononoke (San) — Wilderness awareness
San’s connection to the forest and her determination make her a strong guide in wild terrain and a fierce defender of people she trusts. She contributes knowledge of moving through an environment where roads and settlements may be dangerous, while her independence can help the team avoid complacency. She may be difficult to reconcile with a group that treats every unfamiliar place or creature as something to control.
8. Doctor Strange — Magical defense and escape
Doctor Strange brings the roster’s most flexible magical defense: portals and other spells could create ways out of a trap, protect people, or change the shape of an encounter. In a crisis, an escape route can be more valuable than another weapon. His abilities depend on the rules and circumstances of his own universe, so the team cannot assume he can open a portal anywhere, indefinitely, or without risk.

9. Link — Versatile equipment and calm execution
Link is a capable adventurer whose varied tools and composure make him useful when a plan needs more than brute force. Depending on the version, his gear can support ranged attacks, exploration and creative problem-solving. The exact equipment differs across games, so this pick assumes a well-equipped incarnation rather than a single universal loadout; supplies and tools also need maintenance and replenishment.
10. Katara — Healing and care
Katara rounds out the team with waterbending and a strong capacity to care for injured companions. In a crisis, helping people recover and keeping them functioning can matter as much as stopping an attacker. Her healing has limits and should not be equated with a guaranteed cure for a zombie bite; the team would still need to treat infection as a serious risk and avoid exposure.

Combat can buy time, but survival also depends on judgment, scouting, supplies and cooperation. A capable leader can prevent a dangerous confrontation; a scout can help the group choose a safer route; a practical companion can keep morale from collapsing. The roster’s magic is most useful when treated as a specific advantage—protection, mobility or problem-solving—not as permission to ignore food, rest, hygiene or risk.
What changes if you use different zombie rules?
- If bites are always fatal: prevention and distance matter more than healing. Katara’s care remains valuable, but should not be mistaken for immunity.
- If zombies can be defeated only by a special method: the group first needs to learn that rule. Hermione and Geralt are especially useful for investigation, while the others provide time and protection.
- If magic works without restriction: the crossover becomes unbalanced. Limiting spells by availability, effort or uncertainty makes the team comparison more meaningful.
- If the setting is mostly wilderness: Aragorn, San and Sam gain importance. In a dense urban setting, scouting, escape and controlled movement become central.
Turn the premise into a tabletop game
If you want to build your own version of this scenario with friends, D&Z describes itself as a conversion kit for running a modern zombie-survival tabletop role-playing game with Dungeons & Dragons 5e. Its official overview describes player and game-master guides, including character creation, monster statistics and loot tables. That is an optional way to play with the premise, not a requirement for assembling the fictional roster.
