Location scout Louise Adderley described the process to Netflix Tudum, including how a private home is temporarily turned into a set.
How does production choose a villa?
Scouting begins with the expected filming dates and the weather. Adderley says reality television needs dependable sunshine: “In reality TV, obviously you need the weather to be amazing,” she says. “It needs to be hot, sunny — you can’t film in rainy seasons.”
Weather is only one filter. Adderley says the team also considers whether a country has hosted filming before, whether it has the infrastructure production needs, and whether visas are available. Those practical factors shape which locations are feasible before the team settles on a property.
The villa itself must serve two audiences: viewers and the crew. A large pool and a substantial living room are useful features, Adderley says, but a property also has to be workable for production. As she puts it, “It’s almost like taking a big studio show and putting it into a villa.”

How does a private home become a set?
Once a villa is selected, production may remove its existing furniture, create a command center, and install fake walls. The walls provide space to route cameras, lighting, and cables out of sight. The camera-ready rooms are only part of the building: Netflix’s account says that, because of the amount of equipment involved, usually about half the house is used for filming.
That temporary conversion is why the property must work beyond what appears on screen. The crew needs room for equipment and operations while preserving the look of a villa rather than a conventional studio.

- Build Your Own Pink Villa – Create a 4-story house with 903 pieces, featuring a living room, garage, bathroom, dressing room, bedroom and rooftop TV lounge. Furniture and colorful details give girls a home to build, arrange and explore
- Pull-Out Floors for Room-by-Room Play — The second-floor bathroom and dressing area and third-floor bedroom pull out so girls can reach inside to arrange furniture and set up scenes. This room-by-room access makes the interior part of the play, rather than something to look at through the walls
- More to Play With After the Build — Park the pink car in the garage, arrange the outdoor table and chairs, or imagine a pool party beside the slide. A motorcycle, flamingo decoration and two cats add details for pretend play. Kids can create their own house stories and share the finished villa with a sibling or friend
- A Building Project to Share – Numbered bags help organize the build into stages, so kids can take a break and return to their project. Build on your own or enjoy a shared project with a parent, sibling or friends, then display the finished house on a desk or shelf. Recommended for ages 8 and up; younger or less practiced builders may need help with assembly
- A Gift for House & Building Fans — A birthday, Christmas or just-because gift for girls ages 8–12 who enjoy building, decorating rooms and playing house. The bricks are compatible with major building blocks sets, making the villa an addition to an existing collection
How long does filming take?
Adderley says production can last up to 13 weeks, divided into seven weeks of preparation, four weeks of filming, and two weeks of cleanup. That is her account of a production schedule, not a confirmed timetable for every season. The filming itself is only one phase; preparation and restoring the property also take time.
What happens to the villa after production?
The crew is contractually required to restore the property to its original condition, including small furnishings. Adderley describes her role as building trust with owners as well as finding locations: “My job is to find the villas in the first place but also spend the time with the owners to gain that sense of trust that everything will go back to exactly the way we found it.”

Why does the location matter to the series?
The setting helps distinguish one season’s visual identity from another. Adderley describes choosing a location as an editorial decision: “In the same way that you change the cast, it’s an editorial choice to put different visuals on screen,” she says. “The location becomes such a part of the show.”
Netflix’s coverage discusses location work for both Too Hot to Handle and Dated & Related, and its logistics are attributed to Adderley. It does not establish every production detail for the original season or every later season. In particular, Netflix’s description of a luxury villa in Turks & Caicos refers specifically to season 5; it should not be treated as the location of the show’s original season.
