Tony Todd played adult Jake Sisko in Star Trek: Deep Space Nine’s “The Visitor,” bringing the episode’s older-Jake perspective to life alongside Cirroc Lofton’s younger Jake. Todd later said the role arrived as he was grieving the aunt who raised him, and he understood the performance as a tribute to her. His preparation and personal connection help explain why his work resonates—without reducing a celebrated episode to one actor’s contribution.

Who did Tony Todd play in “The Visitor”?

In “The Visitor,” Todd plays Jake Sisko as an adult; Lofton plays Jake at a younger age. The episode is listed as Season 4, Episode 2 on StarTrek.com. Archived Deep Space Nine press material identifies it as episode 75, production 476, credits Michael Taylor as writer and David Livingston as director, and lists Todd as Adult Jake.

The two actors’ roles are complementary rather than competing: Lofton establishes the younger Jake, while Todd carries the older perspective. Todd said he asked the production to send him key episodes featuring Lofton so he could have a reference for the character. He recalled studying a physical resemblance between them as he shaped his own performance. That preparation offers a practical bridge between the two life stages without suggesting Todd simply imitated Lofton.

Why was the role personally meaningful to Todd?

Todd told StarTrek.com that he had just finished Candyman 2 when his aunt—the woman who raised him—died. He said he was devastated and unable to work for four months. Receiving the “The Visitor” script got him out of the house and to the producers’ office. He described playing Jake as “sort of my homage to the parental figure in my life that I loved and cherished.”

That account gives the performance a personal context: Todd brought his own experience of loss to a story centered on Jake’s devotion to his father, Benjamin Sisko. It does not establish what Todd was thinking in any particular scene or what direction he received; the connection is the one Todd himself described.

What makes Todd’s Jake memorable?

The role asks Todd to make the audience recognize Jake as the same person Lofton played, while conveying the weight of a life lived beyond the younger character’s years. His stated preparation—watching selected Lofton episodes and looking for points of physical continuity—speaks directly to that challenge. The older Jake is not a separate character so much as the continuation of one, and Todd’s work helps make that continuity legible.

Todd also said the episode had a lasting effect on his own career: “The Visitor” changed my life, not just in terms of convention appearances.” The remark is his reflection on what followed from the episode, not a claim that one performance alone accounts for its standing.

Why is “The Visitor” regarded as one of Deep Space Nine’s best episodes?

Director David Livingston’s official interview describes “The Visitor” as “regarded as one of the top episodes of the entire series.” That is Livingston’s characterization of its reputation, not the result of a cited audience poll or a formal ranking. The episode’s achievement belongs to the work as a whole—its writing, direction, cast and production—not to Todd alone.

The story’s emotional force depends on seeing Jake across time. Todd’s adult portrayal gives that perspective a face and a presence, while Lofton’s earlier performance provides the point of continuity Todd consciously studied. The result is a role that matters both to the episode’s structure and, by Todd’s account, to his own life.
