George Clooney said his wife, Amal, found his darkened hair funny when he dyed it for his Broadway role as journalist Edward R. Murrow in Good Night, and Good Luck. “It’s not my favorite look, and my wife, she thinks it’s funny,” he said on CBS Mornings, according to E! News. That is Clooney’s account of Amal’s reaction—not a direct quote from her.
Why George Clooney dyed his hair
Clooney changed his familiar salt-and-pepper hair to a darker look for his portrayal of Edward R. Murrow in the Broadway production of Good Night, and Good Luck. The stage play adapts the story of the journalist and his confrontation with Senator Joseph McCarthy’s anti-communist campaign.
Clooney discussed the change in an appearance on CBS Mornings. E! News reported his description of Amal’s response: “It’s not my favorite look, and my wife, she thinks it’s funny.” His remark indicates that he was not fond of the darker look himself; it does not establish Amal’s view beyond what he recounted.
His look at the 2025 Tony Awards
By the 78th Tony Awards on June 8, 2025, Clooney had returned to his salt-and-pepper hair. He attended the ceremony as a nominee for Best Performance by an Actor in a Leading Role in a Play for Good Night, and Good Luck.
