Tombstone (1993) is a Western about Wyatt Earp, Doc Holliday and the conflict that led to the gunfight at the O.K. Corral. It is based on real people and events, but its heroic portrait of Earp is also part of a larger American legend. Here’s what the film depicts, what its historical framing leaves out, and how to watch it.
What is Tombstone about?
Directed by George P. Cosmatos, Tombstone follows Wyatt Earp and his brothers as they try to settle in the Arizona town, and Doc Holliday, Earp’s friend, as tensions escalate with a group of outlaws. The story builds toward the 1881 gunfight at the O.K. Corral. Disney+ and Apple TV both list the film as a 1993 Western; their listings name Kurt Russell, Val Kilmer, Sam Elliott, Bill Paxton, Powers Boothe and Michael Biehn among the cast. Is Tombstone based on a true story?
Yes, in the sense that its central figures and the O.K. Corral conflict come from real history. But the film is a dramatization, not a comprehensive historical account. It organizes the past into a clear Western narrative, with Earp as a lawman confronting lawlessness and Holliday as a memorable ally. The movie’s dramatic choices should not be mistaken for a scene-by-scene record of events.
How historically accurate is its portrait of Wyatt Earp?
The most useful distinction is between the historical people and the legend that grew around them. PBS’s American Experience describes the O.K. Corral as part of a national creation myth and Earp’s transformation into a symbol of Western law and order. That later public image is not a complete portrait of a complicated person; it is a story Americans came to tell about the settlement of the West. PBS, “Wyatt Earp” transcript

Historian Paul A. Hutton, in the PBS transcript, describes the idealized image this way: “Wyatt Earp becomes the symbol of western law and order, the town taming marshal, absolutely dedicated to the law, and to all that means: to the settlement of the West, to the coming of civilization, to the end of savagery, to a place where schoolmarms and churches will replace the gambling dens and saloons that infest western towns.” The film’s heroic framing fits that enduring image, but the existence of the image does not establish that every plot point or characterization is historically exact.
PBS also recounts Earp’s hope that a screen portrayal could help vindicate him. Its transcript attributes this line to a letter from Earp to actor William S. Hart: “If the story were exploited on the screen by you, it would do much toward setting me right before a public which has always been fed lies about me.” The quotation is useful context for how Earp understood his reputation, not proof that the film itself settles disputes about his life.

What should viewers know about the horse and gunfire scenes?
American Humane Society’s production report describes trained horses performing falls and rearings, stunt performers handling the reported falls from horseback, and prepared ground for falls. It says quarter loads were used when animals were present during gunfire scenes, with gunfire sound augmented in post-production. The report also recounts an accidental horse fall during a gunfight sequence and says the horse was not injured. These are details documented in that report; they should not be read as an independent audit of every practice on the production. American Humane Society production report
