Tom Hanks’s most iconic roles show how widely his screen work ranges: from the comic fantasy of Big to the dramas Philadelphia and Forrest Gump, and from historical ensembles to voicing Woody in Toy Story. There is no official ranking of his most iconic performances, so this selection focuses on roles recognized by film and television institutions—and on the different kinds of work they represent.
What makes these Tom Hanks roles iconic?
“Iconic” is a matter of interpretation, not an award category or a settled ranking. The roles below stand out for different reasons: an early breakthrough, two consecutive Best Actor Oscar wins, a major voice performance that became part of a long-running film series, and work in acclaimed historical and ensemble dramas. Together, they offer a useful cross-section, not a complete filmography.

Big introduced Hanks as a leading comic actor
Big (1988)
In this fantasy comedy, Hanks plays a mischievous 12-year-old in a 30-year-old body. The role showed his knack for playing an adult character who has to navigate the world with a child’s perspective. The American Film Institute identifies it as the performance that earned him his first Academy Award nomination: AFI’s profile of Big.
Philadelphia and Forrest Gump brought consecutive Best Actor Oscars
Philadelphia (1993)
Hanks won the Academy Award for Best Actor for his performance in this serious drama. The role marks a contrast with the broad comedy of Big: it places a dramatic performance at the center of his best-known work. The Television Academy records the win in its career profile of Hanks.

Forrest Gump (1994)
As the title character, Hanks gives the film its point of view as Forrest moves through events in American life. He won a second consecutive Best Actor Oscar for the performance. The Television Academy’s profile records the back-to-back wins, and the Academy’s 1995 ceremony archive lists the award for Forrest Gump. Paramount’s film page identifies Hanks as Forrest and describes the performance as Oscar-winning: Forrest Gump at Paramount.
While accepting the award, Hanks said, as reproduced by the American Film Institute: “I’m standing here because the woman I share my life with has taught me, and demonstrates for me every day, just what love is.” The AFI feature on Forrest Gump attributes the words to Hanks’s acceptance speech.
Woody made Hanks a defining voice in Toy Story
Toy Story (1995) and the films that followed
Hanks voices Sheriff Woody, a toy cowboy, in the Toy Story film series. This is voice acting, not an on-screen performance in costume or animation. It also differs from his live-action roles: the character is built through vocal performance, dialogue, and the animation around him.
The Academy describes the original Toy Story as introducing Woody and Buzz Lightyear. It received three Oscar nominations and a Special Achievement Academy Award. The Academy’s collection page for Toy Story also notes the acclaimed sequels, including Oscar-winning Toy Story 3.

Other roles show his range beyond comedy and voice work
Institutional profiles also recognize Hanks’s performances in films built around historical events, large ensembles, or a central character under pressure. A few examples make the contrast clear:
- Apollo 13: A historical spaceflight drama, one of the films listed among Hanks’s best-known work by the American Academy of Arts and Sciences.
- Saving Private Ryan: A war film whose ensemble and historical setting offer a different frame from the character-centered fantasy of Big or Forrest Gump; it is also included in the Academy of Arts and Sciences profile.
- The Green Mile: A dramatic role in a film identified among Hanks’s notable work by the same profile.
- Captain Phillips: Another of the profile’s recognized films, centered on a real-life maritime crisis.
The American Academy of Arts and Sciences profile also lists Bridge of Spies and The Post, further examples of Hanks’s work in films grounded in public events and history.
