In the 1986 Top Gun, Tom Cruise’s character, Pete “Maverick” Mitchell, rides a Kawasaki GPZ 900R Ninja. In the 2022 sequel, Top Gun: Maverick, he rides a different motorcycle: the supercharged Kawasaki Ninja H2 Carbon.
Which Kawasaki does Maverick ride in the original Top Gun?
It is the Kawasaki GPZ 900R Ninja, also styled GPz900R. Kawasaki identifies the motorcycle in its retrospective as a 1984 GPz900R Ninja, while its 2022 release calls it the Ninja GPZ 900R. The model identification is clear; descriptions of the exact year are not entirely consistent.
Is the bike in Top Gun: Maverick the same model?
No. The 2022 film features Maverick on a supercharged Kawasaki Ninja H2 Carbon, not the vintage GPZ 900R. Kawasaki said it supplied the sequel production team with four Ninja H2 Carbon motorcycles and two restored Ninja GPZ 900R motorcycles. The restored GPZs were supplied to the production, but Kawasaki identifies the H2 Carbon as the bike Maverick rides in the film. (Kawasaki)

Why the GPZ 900R became part of the film’s image
The GPZ 900R’s appearance ties the original film to a specific moment in motorcycle history. Motorcycle Classics says Kawasaki introduced it late in 1983 as a 1984 model and describes it as the first production motorcycle with a liquid-cooled transverse four-cylinder engine, dual overhead cams and four valves per cylinder. Its 908cc displacement and claimed 113 hp at 9,500 rpm refer to the publication’s featured 1985 motorcycle, not necessarily every market version or model year.

What year was Tom Cruise’s original bike?
Kawasaki’s 2016 retrospective calls the motorcycle Cruise rode a 1984 GPz900R Ninja. Motorcycle Classics says the model arrived late in 1983 as a 1984 model, while its detailed feature covers a 1985 GPZ900R. These sources support the GPZ 900R identification, but they do not establish one universally agreed exact model year for the screen motorcycle.
