It also says Jeffrey Katzenberg, then chairman of Walt Disney Studios, had known Cruise for more than a decade, and quotes Katzenberg positively about his work ethic and craft. These are evidence of professional connections and esteem, not proof that either man was among Cruise’s closest personal friends.
Cameron Crowe: a positive account of working together
A January 2002 Vanity Fair profile describes Cruise working closely with director Cameron Crowe on Vanilla Sky. Crowe recalled Cruise’s energy on set: “Tom was always the first guy there, going, ‘C’mon,’” His account supports a positive working relationship on the film; it does not establish how close they were away from work.

In an ABC News interview published in August 2004, after their divorce, Cruise described Kidman as a friend and co-parent: “Good friends, you know? Uh, partners with our kids and someone I care about very deeply,” he said. That statement records his description at the time, not a current status update.

No such conclusion is supported by the account cited here. Cruise publicly criticized Shields’s use of antidepressants for postpartum depression in 2005, prompting a public disagreement. In a later retrospective, TIME reported in 2017 that Shields said Cruise came to her home and “gave me a heartfelt apology.” TIME also noted that she attended his 2006 wedding to Katie Holmes. This documents a past conflict and reported reconciliation, not an ongoing feud or avoidance.
