Several artists best known for one signature song have also built substantial careers beyond it. Secondary publications have reported net-worth estimates ranging from about $5 million to $60 million for some of them—but these are not audited financial statements, and the figures can differ by source and year. “One-hit wonder” here means an artist strongly associated with a breakout song, not someone whose career consisted of only one success.
What “one-hit wonder” means—and what these estimates can tell you
The label is shorthand for public recognition, not a reliable summary of an artist’s whole career. As LoveMONEY’s December 2025 roundup notes, some artists on such lists had success in their home markets, genre charts, albums, or other work beyond the song most familiar to a broad audience.

The net-worth amounts below are estimates reported by secondary sources, not verified private financial data. MarketRealist’s 2023 roundup attributes its figures to Celebrity Net Worth unless otherwise noted; LoveMONEY also generally relies on Celebrity Net Worth estimates. Treat each number as a source-specific claim, not a definitive valuation or a precise ranking of who earned the most.
10 artists associated with a signature hit
1. Bobby McFerrin — “Don’t Worry, Be Happy”
MarketRealist reported a net-worth estimate of $5 million for McFerrin in its 2023 roundup. The 1988 a cappella hit is his best-known chart success, but the estimate should not be read as proof that the song alone generated that wealth. Source: MarketRealist (2023).

2. Toni Basil — “Mickey”
Basil is closely associated with “Mickey,” the 1982 hit. MarketRealist reported an estimated $5 million net worth in 2023. The song was originally written by Mike Chapman and Nicky Chinn under the title “Kitty,” according to the same article; the figure is an estimate, not a public accounting of Basil’s income. Source: MarketRealist (2023).
3. Vanilla Ice — “Ice Ice Baby”
Vanilla Ice’s case shows why a single number can mislead: MarketRealist reported an estimate of $12 million in 2023, while LoveMONEY reported $20 million in December 2025. LoveMONEY also points to songwriting royalties and later property-renovation television work as parts of his wider income story. Neither estimate establishes how much any one source contributed or verifies his personal finances.

4. Sir Mix-a-Lot — “Baby Got Back”
MarketRealist reported an estimated $30 million net worth for Sir Mix-a-Lot in 2023. LoveMONEY describes licensing, production, television work, and continued income associated with “Baby Got Back.” Those are reported possible income channels, not an independently verified breakdown of his earnings. 5. Billy Ray Cyrus — “Achy Breaky Heart”
MarketRealist reported a $20 million estimate for Cyrus in 2023. The article also notes work beyond the song, including Disney projects and contributions to his daughter Miley Cyrus’s career. The estimate therefore should not be attributed to “Achy Breaky Heart” alone. Source: MarketRealist (2023).
6. Psy — “Gangnam Style”
MarketRealist reported an estimated $60 million net worth for Psy in 2023 and mentioned his record label, P Nation. LoveMONEY describes royalties, downloads, advertising, and endorsements among possible revenue sources. These articles do not provide an audited accounting of those sources, and any view or sales count should be checked against a dated original source before being treated as current. Rank #4
7. Morten Harket — a-ha’s “Take On Me”
“Take On Me” is a-ha’s song, while the $60 million estimate reported in MarketRealist’s 2023 article is for Harket. Keeping that distinction clear matters: a band’s hit and an individual member’s reported net worth are not interchangeable. Source: MarketRealist (2023).
8. Carly Rae Jepsen — “Call Me Maybe”
LoveMONEY identifies Jepsen with “Call Me Maybe” and says she co-wrote it. Its December 2025 article reports 12.5 million copies sold and chart placements in 18 countries; those figures are LoveMONEY’s claims and are not independently verified here. A signature hit is only one part of a musician’s career, and the figures should not be treated as a current sales or chart tally without checking original records. Source: LoveMONEY (December 2025).

9. Sinéad O’Connor — “Nothing Compares 2 U”
MarketRealist described O’Connor’s cover as her biggest hit and reported an estimated net worth of $1.5 million in 2023. That estimate falls below the usual meaning of “worth millions” as several million dollars, so she is better understood as a prominent signature-hit example than as a clear fit for the headline’s threshold. Source: MarketRealist (2023).
10. Taylor Hicks — “Do I Make You Proud”
MarketRealist connects Hicks’s song with his “American Idol” finale win and reported a $1 million estimate in 2023. That is one million exactly, not evidence of a fortune in the tens of millions; he likewise illustrates how broadly the phrase “worth millions” can be used in online roundups. Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Do musicians still earn money from one hit?
A successful song can continue to generate income through royalties and licensing, but a performer is not automatically the only person with a financial interest in it. Songwriting and publishing rights are distinct from rights in a sound recording, and the relevant contracts and ownership determine who receives money. The amount an artist earns cannot be inferred from a song’s popularity alone.
LoveMONEY describes royalties and licensing as continuing income possibilities for some artists, alongside other work and business activity. Its examples do not establish a universal payout rate or disclose a complete accounting. A useful distinction is between a song being commercially valuable and a particular artist receiving a specific share of that value.
Who made the most money from a one-hit wonder?
The available estimates do not support a reliable winner. MarketRealist’s 2023 estimates place Psy and Morten Harket at $60 million, but that is a comparison of claims from one secondary article, not audited balances. Vanilla Ice’s $12 million estimate in MarketRealist and $20 million estimate in LoveMONEY also demonstrate how source and date can change the apparent result. Nor do these figures isolate income from the signature song from income earned through later work, investments, or other rights.
