McKenney called the Wizard “a pivotal role that I love” but said it was “just not the motor of the show.” He contrasted the role with the demands on the performers playing Elphaba and Glinda, whose parts carry much of the production’s vocal and dramatic workload.
How McKenney approached the Wizard
McKenney described his interpretation as “a sort of wiry, old, mad scientist almost.” That is his characterization of the role, rather than a definitive description of every portrayal of the Wizard.

What Wicked meant to him
Wicked retells the world of The Wizard of Oz from another angle. McKenney praised its score, performers and story, saying it twists the familiar tale to examine it differently. He also described the musical as being about friendship and said it carried a message about mental health and anti-bullying.

McKenney’s connection to Perth began well before this production. He grew up in Tuart Hill, and his mother Peta’s Morley Dance Studio was where he was introduced to performance.
