Need a nudge on NYT Connections #658, published Sunday, March 30, 2025? Start with the hints below and stop before the spoiler section if you want to keep solving. The full groups and answers follow.

Hints for Connections #658

  • Yellow: These words can all mean something close to “average.”
  • Green: Look for four things depicted on the Great Seal of the United States.
  • Blue: Each word appears in a proper noun that is a spoken phrase in a Broadway musical title.
  • Purple: Add the same word after each entry to make a familiar compound noun.

Full solution — spoiler

The groups and answers below are corroborated by Try Hard Guides’ March 29, 2025 answer guide and Tom’s Guide’s March 30, 2025 guide. They are secondary answer guides; a primary NYT archive page was not available to verify the puzzle directly.

Yellow — AVERAGE

MEAN, NORM, PAR, STANDARD

Green — PICTURED ON THE U.S. GREAT SEAL

ARROWS, EAGLE, OLIVE BRANCH, SHIELD

Blue — PROPER NOUNS IN BROADWAY MUSICAL TITLES THAT ARE SPOKEN PHRASES

BIRDIE, DOLLY, KATE, YANKEES

Purple — ___MAN

BOGEY, CRAFTS, GENTLE, SPOKES

Why the groupings can mislead

Several entries invite a golf interpretation: MEAN, STANDARD, and PAR can point toward averages or measurement, while BIRDIE and BOGEY are golf terms. The intended groups split those associations: the first three belong with the “average” set, while BIRDIE belongs to the Broadway-title set and BOGEY completes a compound with “man.” The final four form bogeyman, craftsman, gentleman, and spokesman.

Tom’s Guide reported a Connections Companion difficulty rating of 3.4 out of 5 for this puzzle. That is an attributed subjective rating, not an official NYT measure.
