The Most-Watched Talk Shows in America: What 2025–26 Ratings Show

The available ratings identify leading daytime and late-night shows, but different periods and audience measures prevent a fair all-format top 10.

There is no defensible, current top 10 that ranks every American talk show on one scale. The available ratings compare different formats and periods: LateNighter reports 2025–26 late-night season averages, while daytime figures include a single week in June 2025 and a separate season-to-date tally. On the available like-for-like late-night measure, Gutfeld! led the programs tracked by LateNighter, averaging 3.01 million viewers across 239 telecasts. That is a useful answer to “What are the most popular talk shows in America?”—as long as the format and measurement period are clear.

How to read talk-show popularity ratings

A ranking depends on three choices: what counts as a talk show, which audience measure is used, and what dates the measurement covers. Total viewers and adults 18–49 can produce different leaders. A weekly result is not directly comparable with a season average, and daytime figures should not be mixed into a late-night ranking as if they covered the same period.

Nielsen’s weekly U.S. Top 10 ranks programs by total viewers age 2+, but it is not a talk-show-only chart. The available ratings therefore support a dated look at leading shows, not a single authoritative top 10 across formats.

Late-night leaders in the 2025–26 season

LateNighter’s comparison uses Nielsen Big Data + Panel and Live+7. It covers September 22, 2025, through September 20, 2026, and counts first-run episodes in most cases. These figures are season averages, not current-week ratings.

Program Average total viewers Adults 18–49 Context
Gutfeld! 3.01 million across 239 telecasts Not stated Led the late-night programs LateNighter tracked. It airs at 10 p.m. ET/7 p.m. PT, earlier than many network talk shows.
The Late Show with Stephen Colbert 2.88 million Not stated The season figure runs from September through May and includes its farewell month. The show ended May 21, 2026; it is not currently airing.
Jimmy Kimmel Live! 2.52 million 284,000 Led the tracked field among adults 18–49.
The Tonight Show Starring Jimmy Fallon 1.39 million Not stated Season average.
Late Night with Seth Meyers 989,000 Not stated Season average.

All figures in the table are reported by LateNighter from Nielsen Live+7 for its 2025–26 comparison. “Not stated” means the cited comparison does not provide a figure for that cell; it should not be read as zero. The earlier time slot for Gutfeld! is another reason not to treat the table as a perfect comparison of shows airing at the same hour.

The View’s place in daytime ratings

Daytime talk shows belong in a separate comparison. ABC reported that The View averaged 2.407 million viewers in the week of June 16, 2025, and ranked No. 1 among daytime network talk shows and news programs in total viewers for that week. The figure is a one-week Live+Same Day result, not an annual average or a direct comparison with the late-night Live+7 season figures.

A separate daytime table from Soap Opera Network lists The View at 2.636 million season-to-date total viewers for the 2025–26 season, using Nielsen Live+Same Day Big Data + Panel. That is a secondary-source season-to-date figure. Its period and measurement window differ from both ABC’s one-week result and LateNighter’s late-night season comparison.

Why these figures do not make a reliable top 10

  • The formats differ. Daytime panel programs and late-night shows serve different schedules and audiences; an earlier evening program such as Gutfeld! adds another daypart distinction.
  • The measurement periods differ. The cited View result from ABC is one week, while LateNighter’s late-night numbers are season averages. The daytime season-to-date figure has its own period.
  • The audience windows differ. ABC’s weekly View figure is Live+Same Day; LateNighter’s late-night comparison is Live+7. Those are not interchangeable measures.
  • The definition of “talk show” matters. Nightline, for example, averaged 957,000 viewers in LateNighter’s comparison, but it is a news program rather than a conventional talk show. Including news-talk would change the scope of a list.
  • Popularity can mean different things. Total viewers favor one kind of comparison; adults 18–49 can produce another. In LateNighter’s tracked late-night field, Jimmy Kimmel Live! led that demographic with 284,000 even though Gutfeld! led total viewers.

Nielsen explains that its weekly U.S. program Top 10 uses total viewers age 2+ under Big Data + Panel. That broad chart does not provide a talk-show-only top 10, so it cannot fill the gap with a directly comparable list.

What a fair top 10 would require

A credible cross-format ranking would need an agreed definition of talk show, a common date range, and the same audience measure and viewing window for every program. Until those conditions are met, the clearest approach is to compare shows within their own format and label the period and metric beside each figure. The ratings cited here identify leaders within specific comparisons; they do not establish ten shows in a definitive national order.
