The closest real-life parallel to Gladys Russell’s wedding in The Gilded Age is the marriage of American heiress Consuelo Vanderbilt to Charles Spencer-Churchill, the 9th Duke of Marlborough. The show’s fictional wedding draws on that high-profile American heiress–British duke match, but it does not recreate the couple’s full history.
Which royal wedding inspired Gladys Russell’s?
The historical marriage cited alongside Gladys’s fictional nuptials is Consuelo Vanderbilt’s marriage to Charles Spencer-Churchill, the 9th Duke of Marlborough. The official episode-podcast listing identifies the parallel, and Vogue’s account of the real marriage and the show places it in the series’ fact-versus-fiction context.

That comparison is best understood as a parallel in the social pairing: an American heiress marries a British aristocrat. It does not mean Gladys and her husband are fictional stand-ins whose entire story reproduces Vanderbilt and Marlborough’s documented lives.
What happens in the show?
In season three, episode four, “Marriage Is a Gamble,” Gladys Russell, played by Taissa Farmiga, marries Hector, Duke of Buckingham. TV Insider describes the match as arranged by Gladys’s mother, Bertha, and says Gladys had resisted the wedding. Within the series, the marriage serves the Russells’ social ambitions while giving the duke aristocratic standing; those are plot points about the fictional characters, not biographical claims about Vanderbilt.
#1 Best Overall
For the historical comparison, the key distinction is between a real marriage and a serialized fictional plot. The sources support the American heiress–British duke resemblance, not a claim that every motive, event, or outcome in Gladys’s story maps onto Consuelo Vanderbilt’s life.
Where was Gladys’s wedding filmed?
The church ceremony was filmed at St. Peter’s Episcopal Church in Albany, New York, not at the historical Vanderbilt wedding venue. ELLE Decor describes the church’s Gothic design, its 1859 redesign by architect Richard Upjohn, its bluestone and brown sandstone exterior, and an interior featuring black walnut and stained glass. Production designer Bob Shaw explained the location’s fit in terms of the Episcopal identity of New York’s upper crust in the show’s setting.

How the production created the wedding
The dress and venue research
The official episode-podcast listing says the wedding-dress design involved three months of research and collaboration. ELLE Decor reports that the production team drew on photographs and church archives when planning the venue’s decoration. These accounts describe research informing the production; they do not establish that the finished dress or setting copies every detail of Consuelo Vanderbilt’s wedding.
Flowers and period atmosphere
ELLE Decor reports that the crew used thousands of real flowers, including carnations and roses. Shaw noted that some flowers considered appropriate to the period may not look as luxurious to a modern audience. The flower count is a production account, not a precise independently verified tally.

A separate Art of Costume Podcast listing describes a season-three discussion with costume designer Kasia Walicka-Maimone about Gladys’s wedding and the show’s visual design. The listing does not, by itself, substantiate specific claims about individual garments.
