Jordan Pickford is the clearest example of a famous Sunderland supporter in the available reporting: he grew up locally, came through Sunderland’s academy and has been described as a Sunderland fan. But the evidence available does not support a reliable list of eleven celebrity supporters. Sunderland Echo’s 2025 gallery names 55 public figures using broad signals such as attending matches, posting about the club or wearing its colours; only part of that gallery is accessible here. The names below are the notable people that can be identified, with their different kinds of Sunderland connection kept distinct.
What counts as a Sunderland celebrity supporter?
A famous person’s connection to Sunderland AFC can mean several different things: being a fan, coming through the academy, holding a club job or ownership role, or simply being seen in club colours. Those are not interchangeable. Sunderland Echo’s gallery, published on 19 June 2025 and updated on 22 June, uses a broad editorial standard that includes match attendance, social-media posts and wearing Sunderland colours. It is a selection, not a formal register or an objective ranking.
The names below are therefore not presented as a ranked top six. Where the available account establishes a club role or local connection rather than fandom, that distinction is made explicit.
Notable names with an identifiable Sunderland connection
Jordan Pickford
Pickford is the strongest fit for the phrase “celebrity supporter” among the names covered here. The Guardian reported in July 2018 that he was born and raised locally, developed through Sunderland’s academy and was celebrated by Sunderland supporters for his England performances. Sunderland Echo search-result reporting also describes him as a Sunderland fan who grew up in the area and came through the academy. These are related but separate facts: local roots and academy development help explain his connection to the club, while the fan description speaks to supporter identity. The 2018 reporting is historical context, not evidence of his current club affiliations or activity.

Jordan Henderson
The Guardian’s July 2018 report also described Henderson as locally born and bred and a Sunderland academy product. It covered the pride Sunderland supporters felt as he and Pickford represented England, despite both having moved on to other clubs. That establishes a strong local and developmental connection; it should not be stretched into a claim about Henderson’s current supporter activity.
Steve Cram
Sunderland Echo’s gallery describes the former middle-distance runner as an avid Sunderland fan. That is a direct supporter claim, rather than an inference from a club job or birthplace.

Martin O’Neill
The gallery describes O’Neill as a Sunderland fan while growing up. This supports a personal connection from his youth; it does not, on its own, establish how active or current his support is.
Niall Quinn
The gallery identifies Quinn through his multiple past roles at Sunderland. Those roles make him a prominent figure in the club’s story, but a former club association is not by itself proof of celebrity-fan status. He belongs in a broader account of famous Sunderland-connected people, with that qualification.

Kyril Louis-Dreyfus
The gallery includes Louis-Dreyfus, whose connection is as Sunderland’s owner. Ownership is a formal relationship with the club, not evidence by itself that he is a celebrity supporter. He is relevant to a list of notable figures associated with Sunderland, but should not be counted as a fan solely on that basis.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. Why this is not a definitive list of eleven
The Sunderland Echo gallery says it covers 55 public figures, but the accessible material identifies only part of its entries. The available reporting does not substantiate eleven distinct celebrity supporters with direct, attributable evidence. Adding names from memory or treating a one-off appearance, job or ownership role as proof of fandom would make the list less reliable, not more complete. This article names the people supported by the available accounts and does not claim to reproduce the full gallery.

- Regular fit
- 100% polyester (recycled)
- HEAT.RDY
For a careful reader, the useful distinction is whether the evidence shows fandom itself, a local or academy connection, or a professional or ownership relationship. Pickford has evidence across the first three categories; Henderson is clearly tied to the latter two in the 2018 report. The other four names have the specific connections described above, which should not be blurred into a single claim that everyone is a current, active supporter.
