Their joint statement also said Steve loved Lisa and regretted shortcomings in his early fatherhood. The public response did not settle the differences between the memoir and the family’s recollections.
What did Laurene Powell Jobs and Mona Simpson say?
In a joint statement reported by TIME on August 28, 2018, Laurene Powell Jobs and Mona Simpson wrote: “Lisa is part of our family, so it was with sadness that we read her book, which differs dramatically from our memories of those times.” TIME reported the statement as a response to Lisa Brennan-Jobs’s memoir, Small Fry.
The statement did not offer a scene-by-scene rebuttal. It also said Steve “loved Lisa” and “regretted that he was not the father he should have been during her early childhood.” Those descriptions are the family members’ account of his feelings, not an independent finding about his private thoughts.
What was Small Fry about?
Brennan-Jobs’s memoir recounts her experience growing up as Steve Jobs’s daughter. In a September 12, 2018 interview with PBS’s Amanpour & Company, she described it as a coming-of-age story set in California in the 1980s and 1990s. PBS’s interview also addressed the response from her stepmother and the other children.

The memoir presents Brennan-Jobs’s recollections; the joint statement presents Powell Jobs’s and Simpson’s. Contemporaneous coverage, including WRAL’s account, provides context for the public exchange, but does not independently verify disputed scenes.
What the public response does—and does not—establish
- It establishes the family members’ stated view: Powell Jobs and Simpson said the memoir differed dramatically from their memories.
- It does not resolve the disagreement: The cited coverage provides no neutral adjudication of the scenes or a detailed point-by-point response.
- It preserves a more complicated account of the relationship: The joint statement expressed disagreement while also saying Steve loved Lisa and regretted his shortcomings as a father during her early childhood.
In separate 2011 background, CBS News reported that Laurene Powell Jobs had asked biographer Walter Isaacson to be honest about Steve’s failings as well as his strengths. That earlier report describes her stated approach to his biography; it is not evidence for or against the events recounted in Small Fry.
