Spoilers for the ending of Squid Game Season 3. The six-episode final season gives Gi-hun’s story a brutal, moving conclusion, but its closing games are less surprising than the show’s original contest. It is thrilling and heartbreaking; its hope for the next generation lands alongside an unsettling suggestion that the machinery of the games can survive its players.
Is Squid Game Season 3 worth watching?
Yes, especially if you want to see Gi-hun’s journey reach its intended end. Season 3 turns the show’s familiar combination of lethal games and moral choices toward an intimate question: what, if anything, can one person preserve for the people who come after him? Its finale answers with a sacrifice rather than a clean victory over the system.
The season is less consistently incisive than the first. The contests still generate suspense, but by now the format is familiar, and some of the final turns feel foreseeable. That predictability does not erase the emotional force of the ending; it does make the season’s impact depend more on character and consequence than on discovering a wholly new game.
How the final game makes the season thrilling and heartbreaking
Sky Squid Game turns the rules into a moral trap
The final competition, Sky Squid Game, unfolds across three towers. As Netflix Tudum explains in its ending explainer, the rules about when a round begins determine which deaths count. That detail makes the contest more than a physical challenge: survival depends on how players interpret and use the rules while others are in danger.

The setup sustains tension, but it also makes the season’s destination easier to anticipate. Viewers familiar with the series know that the games are designed to force people into choices that expose their desperation and loyalties. The final round raises the physical stakes without entirely restoring the shock of the first season’s unfamiliar premise.
Gi-hun’s sacrifice gives the finale its emotional weight
Jun-hee’s baby, Player 222, wins after the original competitors fail to survive. Gi-hun sacrifices himself, leaving the child alive to inherit the prize and the possibility of a life beyond the arena. The outcome is heartbreaking because it asks Gi-hun to surrender the future he might have had in order to protect someone who cannot yet protect herself.

Hwang Dong-hyuk, the show’s creator, told Tudum, “Ultimately, the baby represents the future generation.” He connected that idea to an obligation to try to leave “a better world for the future generation.” That is the creator’s stated intention, not a guarantee that the ending’s hope will persuade every viewer. The scene earns its force from the contrast between the child’s vulnerability and the adults’ lethal world.
What the ending means—and what it leaves unresolved
After a six-month time jump, the Front Man carries the baby and the prize forward. That image grants the child a chance to live, but it does not show that the contest’s wider system has been dismantled. The final Los Angeles scene, in which a mysterious recruiter plays ddakji, leaves open the possibility that the games continue elsewhere.

This is a meaningful distinction: Gi-hun’s story reaches closure, while the institution that consumed him remains unresolved. The ending can therefore be read as both hopeful and bleak. A new generation may have been spared, but the forces that made the games possible are not conclusively gone.
Does the final season preserve Season 1’s satire?
The first season’s distinctive force came from binding its spectacle to debt, unequal power and material desperation. In Season 3, the games still show people trapped in a brutal system, but the emphasis shifts toward the VIPs and a broader critique of human cruelty. Shirley Li’s The Atlantic review, “How Squid Game Lost Itself,” argues that this shift weakens the capitalist satire that set the first season apart. That is a specific critical reading rather than a consensus verdict, but it helps explain why the new season can feel more like spectacle than social diagnosis.

The finale also makes a deliberate choice between two kinds of closure. It resolves the personal arc through Gi-hun’s sacrifice, yet refuses the more comforting ending in which defeating one contest abolishes the system. Hwang’s hopeful interpretation and the show’s lingering image of recruitment sit in tension; the season does not fully reconcile them.

Season 3 premiered on June 27, 2025. Netflix’s Season 3 coverage guide lists six episodes, all streaming on Netflix; catalog availability can vary by location and over time. Netflix Tudum identifies Episode 6 as the planned series finale and says there will not be a Season 4, as explained in its Season 4 update.

The season’s reach was enormous by Netflix’s own measures. In a 2025 corporate recap, About Netflix reported 60.1 million views in its first three days of viewing and said the season ranked No. 1 in each of the 93 countries with Netflix Top 10 lists during its debut week. Those are Netflix-reported figures, not independently audited industry-wide comparisons. The same recap identifies Season 1—not Season 3—as Netflix’s most popular show ever, while describing Season 3 as a record-breaking debut. So the franchise’s all-time popularity claim should not be mistaken for a claim that this final season itself became Netflix’s most popular season.
Verdict
Squid Game Season 3 is a thrilling, heartbreaking farewell whose strongest achievement is giving Gi-hun’s story an emotionally consequential ending. Its final game is somewhat predictable, and its broadening critique does not always match the first season’s pointed focus on class and debt. But the child’s survival, Gi-hun’s sacrifice and the unresolved reach of the games leave the finale with a productive unease rather than an easy victory.
