He was 98. His daughter Catherine Corman announced his death in a statement from the family, reported by the Associated Press.
Who was Roger Corman?
Corman was an American filmmaker best known for producing and directing horror, science-fiction, western, teen and biker films with speed and tight budgets. His career began in the mid-1950s, after he worked as a messenger and story analyst at 20th Century-Fox. The nickname “King of the Bs” captured his association with economical genre movies, but it does not tell the whole story: his impact also came from opening doors for new filmmakers and distributing important international cinema.

Career totals differ by source. The Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences says Corman produced more than 300 films and directed 50 titles; a 2024 Los Angeles Times obituary puts his producer total at more than 350. These are source-specific counts, not a single agreed total. The Academy’s profile distinguishes his directing and producing credits.

The Academy’s selected filmography separates directing from producing credits. That distinction matters: not every well-known film associated with Corman was directed by him.
How did Corman make low-budget filmmaking a creative opportunity?
Corman’s productions became known for getting films made quickly and economically. The Academy calls the two-day-and-one-night shoot for the original 1960 The Little Shop of Horrors the acknowledged record for the fastest professional 35mm feature shoot. The scale of his early work is also reflected in figures reported by the Los Angeles Times: Monster From the Ocean Floor was made in six days for $12,000, and The Fast and the Furious (1955) in nine days with a $50,000 budget. The paper also reports that nine Corman-directed productions reached theaters in 1957.

Speed and limited resources demanded practical problem-solving, but Corman saw constraints as a source of latitude as well. In a 2007 documentary about producer Val Lewton, he said: “There are many constraints connected with working on a low budget, but at the same time there are certain opportunities.” He added: “You can gamble a little bit more. You can experiment. You have to find a more creative way to solve a problem or to present a concept,” according to the AP.
Which filmmakers got early opportunities in Corman’s orbit?
Corman’s companies gave people who later became major Hollywood figures early opportunities, though their jobs and credits were not all the same. The Academy identifies Francis Ford Coppola, Martin Scorsese, Ron Howard, Jack Nicholson, Robert De Niro and Jonathan Demme among those whose careers intersected with his productions. The AP also names James Cameron among the filmmakers who worked for Corman.

For many, the environment combined demanding schedules with room to learn by doing. Producer Gale Anne Hurd, who had been Corman’s assistant, called him her “very first boss, my lifetime mentor and my hero,” and described him as “one of the greatest visionaries in the history of cinema,” in comments reported by the AP.
What was New World Pictures’ role?
Corman founded New World Pictures, which combined independent film production with U.S. distribution. The company released films in the United States by internationally acclaimed directors including Ingmar Bergman, François Truffaut, Federico Fellini and Akira Kurosawa. The Academy notes that, within a ten-year period, New World released three films that won the Academy Award in the Foreign Language Film category: Amarcord, Dersu Uzala and The Tin Drum. That distribution work broadened Corman’s legacy beyond the genre films for which he was most widely known.

What award did Corman receive?
In 2009, the Academy’s Board of Governors awarded Corman an Honorary Oscar for nurturing aspiring filmmakers, according to the Academy and AP. It was an honorary award, not a competitive Oscar for directing or producing.
How did Corman want to be remembered?
The AP reported that Corman’s family described him as “generous, open-hearted and kind to all those who knew him.” Corman’s own preferred remembrance was simpler: “I was a filmmaker, just that.”
