The Vivienne, the stage name of Welsh performer James Lee Williams, died at 32. At the inquest concluded on 30 June 2025, Cheshire senior coroner Jacqueline Devonish found that Williams died by misadventure after cardio-respiratory arrest due to ketamine use. The coroner said Williams did not intend to take their own life. The cause had not been made public when the death was first announced in January.
What was The Vivienne’s cause of death?
The inquest concluded that Williams died after cardio-respiratory arrest due to ketamine use. Coroner Jacqueline Devonish recorded the conclusion as death by misadventure and said Williams had not intended to take their own life. ITV and Sky reported the inquest finding on 30 June 2025: ITV News and Sky News.
“The medical cause of death is cardio-respiratory arrest due to ketamine use,” Devonish said. She concluded, “on the balance of probabilities,” that Williams’s death was a misadventure, adding that they took ketamine but did not intend to take their own life.
What was known when the death was announced?
Williams’s death was announced on 5 January 2025 by publicist Simon Jones, who shared the family’s statement. It said: “It is with immense sadness that we let you know our beloved James Lee Williams – The Vivienne, has passed this weekend.” The family asked for privacy and said it would not release further details at that time. ABC News’s report on 6 January noted that the cause had not then been officially shared.
