Roblox’s later engineering postmortem traced the 73-hour disruption to problems in its infrastructure involving Consul and BoltDB.
Why did Roblox say the outage was not caused by a game?
In a Nov. 1, 2021 update, CEO David Baszucki said the outage was “not due to any peak in external traffic or any particular experience.” His initial explanation described a subtle communications bug in backend infrastructure under heavy load, amid growth in the number of servers in Roblox data centers. He did not identify burritos or Chipotle as a cause. Roblox’s outage update gave the broad explanation; the detailed technical account came later.
What actually caused the 73-hour outage?
Roblox Engineering’s Jan. 20, 2022 postmortem identified interacting infrastructure problems involving Consul, a service-discovery system, and BoltDB, a database used by Consul. Under unusually high read/write load, enabling a relatively new Consul streaming feature led to contention and poor performance. The load conditions also exposed a pathological performance problem in BoltDB. Together, these issues impaired a core backend system and made the service unavailable. Roblox’s engineering postmortem says the outage lasted 73 hours.
Why did restoring service take so long?
The failure was difficult to isolate, and some monitoring relied on systems affected by the incident. Recovery also required bringing service back cautiously rather than switching all access on at once. Roblox used DNS steering to restore player access in roughly 10% increments, monitoring stability as it increased access. Full access was restored at 16:45 Pacific Standard Time on Sunday, Oct. 31, 2021, according to the postmortem.

What did Roblox say about the incident afterward?
The postmortem said there was no user data loss or unauthorized access during the outage. Roblox described plans to improve monitoring, remove circular dependencies in observability, speed up bootstrapping, move toward multiple availability zones and data centers, and remediate the Consul issues. In December 2023, the company also described the 2021 failure as beginning with one component in one data center and spreading during the investigation, informing continuing efforts to contain failures and improve resilience.
The postmortem’s reference to 50 million people regularly using Roblox each day reflects the company’s stated context at the time of publication in January 2022; it is not a current user count.
