ABC also reproduced a family statement encouraging people who wished to honor him to watch a great film, share a story with friends, or take a drive in the countryside. The remarks frame remembrance through the things he valued, rather than through a public account of his final illness.

Roles that defined a long career
Tom Hagen in The Godfather films
Duvall played Tom Hagen, the Corleone family’s consigliere, in The Godfather and The Godfather Part II. The Associated Press identifies the first two films and Hagen as central to his legacy. Hagen’s measured presence offered a striking counterpoint to the family’s violence: a trusted adviser whose influence came through judgment and restraint.
Lieutenant Colonel Kilgore in Apocalypse Now
In Francis Ford Coppola’s Apocalypse Now, Duvall played Lieutenant Colonel Kilgore, a military commander whose boldness and volatility made him one of the film’s most memorable figures. ABC News names Kilgore among Duvall’s notable roles. The performance showed how he could make a supporting part vivid and unsettling without making it feel like a conventional hero’s entrance.
Rank #2
Mac Sledge in Tender Mercies
Duvall played Mac Sledge, a country singer confronting the damage in his life, in Tender Mercies. ABC News reports that he won the Academy Award for the role. Where Kilgore is expansive, Mac is subdued; the contrast illustrates Duvall’s ability to carry a story through quiet, guarded behavior as well as forceful character work.

Duvall’s work extended across leading and supporting roles, television and the stage. The Associated Press points to portrayals as varied as an itinerant preacher and Josef Stalin. The Washington Post described his film and television career as roughly 140 credits and noted his Broadway appearances in Wait Until Dark and American Buffalo. That credit figure is the newspaper’s approximate account, not a definitive database total.
The range matters as much as the famous parts. Duvall could be a family adviser, a larger-than-life officer, a worn-down musician, a preacher or a political ruler; no single role captures the full body of work.
