It was a personal comment during a conversation with Jodie Foster—not a casting announcement, confirmation of a new project, or return date.
What Downey said about playing Tony Stark again
Foster asked Downey, “Would you think of putting the suit back on again for Tony Stark?” In response, he described the character as unusually close to his own personality: “It’s just crazily in my DNA. Probably the most like-me character I’ve ever played, even though he’s way cooler than I am. I’ve become surprisingly open-minded to the idea.”
Downey also connected the thought to looking at still photographs of himself and Foster during their conversation. “Do we still look kind of OK?” he recalled asking himself, before adding, “We look pretty good.” The stills prompted that remark; he did not describe a specific story, deal, or production plan.

Why a possible return carries weight
Downey’s Tony Stark story reached its apparent endpoint in Avengers: Endgame (2019), which ComicBook.com identifies as his MCU exit. That makes Foster’s question about putting the suit back on a question about revisiting a role whose story had already reached a major conclusion—not evidence that Marvel had decided to bring the character back.
What the comment does—and doesn’t—confirm
It confirms that, in that 2024 conversation, Downey expressed personal openness to the idea and explained why the role felt close to him. The interview does not say he had received an offer, agreed to appear in a project, or set a return date. The cited coverage does not establish a confirmed later MCU appearance as Tony Stark or Iron Man.

Openness is different from a production announcement. Downey’s words describe how he felt at the time of the interview; they do not establish Marvel’s plans or whether he will reprise the role.
