There is no verified, apples-to-apples ledger of the ten biggest book advances: reported totals mix single books with multi-book contracts, and the rights included can differ. The clearest large deal in Guinness World Records is the $65 million offered for Barack and Michelle Obama’s two memoirs in 2017; Guinness also records a reported $14 million advance for North American rights to Tom Clancy’s Without Remorse. Below is a sourced selection of ten notable reported deals—not a definitive ranking—with each figure kept in its reported context.

How to compare the biggest reported advances

An advance is an upfront payment credited against royalties under a book contract. If sales generate enough royalties to earn out the advance, the author may receive further royalty payments; if they do not, the publisher generally absorbs the shortfall. The details depend on the contract, including its payment schedule, royalty calculations, rights and accounting. An advance is not ordinarily a personal loan that an author must repay simply because a book sells poorly.

Headline figures are not directly comparable when one covers two books or several titles, or when rights vary by format, territory or language. The ten entries below are selected for scale and the quality or interest of their reporting. They are not an independently verified top ten, and their order is not a strict ranking.

Ten major reported book advances and packages

Reported figure Book or package What the report establishes
$65 million Barack and Michelle Obama’s Becoming and A Promised Land Guinness World Records records this as an advance offered for the two memoirs in April 2017. Dividing the total yields $32.5 million per title arithmetically; the figure does not establish two separate contracts at that amount. Celebrity Net Worth’s 2026 ranking instead gives the joint deal as $60 million. Guinness World Records; Celebrity Net Worth.
$14 million Tom Clancy, Without Remorse Guinness says it was reported in August 1992 that Berkeley Putnam paid $14 million (then £7.3 million) for North American rights. Guinness calls it the greatest advance for a single book of fiction. The territorial scope matters: this is not a reported worldwide-rights total. Guinness World Records.
More than $10 million Bill Clinton, My Life The Washington Post reported in August 2001, citing a publishing source, that Clinton would receive more than $10 million. Knopf did not disclose the amount. Later lists give $15 million, but that higher figure is not what the contemporaneous Post report confirmed. The Post said Knopf acquired world publishing rights, including serial, English-language, translation, audio and electronic rights; Clinton retained movie and dramatization rights. The Washington Post.
$30–40 million Stephen King, four thrillers TIME reported in 1988 that King had reportedly been promised this amount for a four-book package. It is a multi-book deal, not an advance for one title. TIME.
$20 million Barack Obama, A Promised Land Celebrity Net Worth’s 2026 ranking lists this as a separate advance for Obama’s memoir. That listing should not be treated as an independently reconciled component of the conflicting $60 million and $65 million reported totals for the joint two-book agreement. Celebrity Net Worth.
$20 million Prince Harry, Spare Celebrity Net Worth lists this figure in its 2026 ranking. The ranking does not establish a comparable breakdown of territories, formats or rights for this entry. Celebrity Net Worth.
$15 million Britney Spears, The Woman in Me Celebrity Net Worth lists this reported figure in 2026; it should be read as that outlet’s ranking figure, not an audited contract disclosure. Celebrity Net Worth.
Up to $14 million Hillary Clinton, Hard Choices Celebrity Net Worth lists an amount of up to $14 million in 2026. “Up to” is the outlet’s stated qualification, not a confirmed fixed payment. Celebrity Net Worth.
$10.1 million Mary Higgins Clark, her next five novels TIME reported this 1988 deal as a five-novel package, not a single-book advance. TIME.
$10 million James Clavell, Whirlwind TIME reported in 1988 that the novel had received a $5 million advance for hardcover and softcover rights. TIME.

Why the Obama figure is often described as the biggest

Guinness World Records identifies the Obama agreement as a $65 million advance offered in April 2017 for Becoming and A Promised Land. That is a two-book total, not a single-title advance. The same Guinness entry says Becoming was published in 2018 and A Promised Land in 2020. It reports sales of 14 million copies for Becoming and more than 3 million for A Promised Land as of January 2021; those are historical figures, not current totals.

#1 Best Overall

A 2026 Celebrity Net Worth ranking gives the joint deal as $60 million, so even the best-known headline total is disputed across published accounts. The two figures should not be silently combined or treated as settled contract disclosures. Guinness’s $65 million entry is a strong record-category reference, while the lower amount remains part of the public reporting.

What “the biggest advance” means depends on the category

Largest reported nonfiction deal

The Guinness entry makes the Obama agreement a standout reported nonfiction advance, but it covers two books. Treating it as one book’s advance would overstate the per-title figure. The $32.5 million division is merely the total divided by two, not evidence that each title had a separately negotiated contract of that value.

Largest reported single-book fiction advance

Guinness labels Clancy’s reported $14 million deal for Without Remorse the greatest advance for a single book of fiction. Its North American-rights scope distinguishes it from broader or multi-title deals. It is also a 1992 report, not a claim that this amount has been adjusted for inflation or directly compared with modern worldwide packages.

Large packages are a different measure

King’s reported $30–40 million for four thrillers and Clark’s $10.1 million for five novels illustrate how multi-book packages can dominate lists of headline totals. A package figure cannot be compared with an advance for one title without knowing the contract’s allocation and rights.

Why published totals differ

Publishers do not always disclose contract terms or exact advances. Contemporary reporting may rely on unnamed publishing sources, while later rankings may repeat estimates or use a different reported total. Rights also affect the value being described: a sum for worldwide publishing rights is not the same comparison as one for North American rights, and a deal can include audio, electronic, translation or serial rights while excluding other uses.

Bill Clinton’s memoir shows why attribution and scope belong beside the number. The Washington Post’s 2001 account said “more than $10 million,” citing a publishing source, while noting Knopf had not revealed the exact amount. Its account also specified a broad set of publishing rights and rights Clinton retained. Later $15 million listings may be useful as reported figures, but they should not be substituted for the contemporaneous report as though the publisher had confirmed them.

Large deals have long involved both aggressive bidding and uncertainty about returns. In a 1988 TIME report on the era’s expensive books and speculative packages, Simon & Schuster editor-in-chief Michael Korda said: “It’s like stars in the movie business. If you want Cher for your movie, by God, you’ve got to pay Cher.” That is historical commentary on the publishing market of the 1980s, not a current pricing rule.

Do a large advance mean the book earned that much?

No. The advance is money paid under the contract and credited against royalties; it is not a public measure of the book’s eventual profit or the author’s total earnings. Whether further royalties are due depends on whether the book earns out under the contract’s accounting rules. A reported advance alone does not show how many copies sold, what the publisher recouped, or what the author ultimately received after any applicable deductions or allocations.
