Thunderbolts* earns its refreshing feel less through bigger spectacle than through a troubled ensemble and a story willing to turn inward. The 2025 Marvel film is not an uncontested return to the studio’s peak, but the case for it is persuasive: strong performances and emotional focus give familiar superhero machinery new life.
Is Thunderbolts* actually good?
For viewers who want character-led superhero filmmaking, yes. The film brings together Yelena Belova, Bucky Barnes, Red Guardian, Ghost, Taskmaster, and John Walker as an unconventional team. You do not need to know every character’s history to follow the basic setup: these are damaged, difficult people forced into an uneasy alliance.

Reviews from the Associated Press and The Atlantic highlight the cast, with Florence Pugh serving as a particularly strong center for the ensemble. That praise is a critical response, not a guarantee that every character or performance will land equally for every viewer. The film’s appeal depends substantially on whether you enjoy watching an ensemble find its rhythm.
What makes it feel like a return to form?
It puts interior conflict ahead of a bigger catastrophe
The clearest departure from the usual superhero escalation arrives in the final act. The Associated Press describes the climax as taking place in a character’s headspace rather than above a threatened metropolis. That inward focus makes emotional conflict—not the size of the danger—the story’s defining stakes.

#1 Best Overall
- After being ensnared in a death trap, an unconventional team of antiheroes assembles and embarks on a dangerous mission. Forced to confront the darkest corners of their pasts, will the group tear themselves apart, or find redemption and prevail?
The shift is relative, not absolute: the movie still has action and comic-book imagery. But it gives the emotional material more room than a plot built chiefly around stopping a city-wide disaster would. That is the strongest reason to call the film refreshing.
The ensemble has a clear center
Both AP and The Atlantic respond positively to the cast, and The Atlantic singles out Pugh’s presence as a center of gravity. The group’s tensions and connections help the film feel like more than a series of franchise cameos. Early reviews also praised the action and thematic ambition, though those release-period reactions should not be mistaken for a current audience or critic-score snapshot.
Rank #2
- Can this disparate group of antiheroes overcome their difficult pasts and form a real team capable of stopping the Void and saving the world?
The plot moves briskly without pretending to reinvent the genre
The Atlantic calls the plotting comparatively crisp and streamlined. The film makes familiar alignments—among Valentina, Bucky, Yelena, and the rest—easy to read, which helps its story move. The trade-off is that clarity is not the same as novelty: the dysfunctional-team setup is a recognizable superhero pattern, and the movie still relies on established MCU relationships.
Where the “peak Marvel” comparison has limits
- Character focus versus spectacle: The inward-looking climax is a strength if you want emotional stakes; viewers seeking ever-larger action may find it less satisfying.
- Ensemble chemistry versus a familiar formula: The cast gives the team-up energy, but reluctant, clashing heroes have been a staple of the genre.
- Emotional themes versus clinical depth: Early critics noted engagement with depression, substance abuse, and mortality alongside humor and action. That does not establish that the film treats those subjects with clinical depth.
- Streamlined storytelling versus surprise: A clear plot is easier to follow, but familiar franchise mechanics can make some turns feel predictable.
So “return to peak Marvel form” works best as a critical argument about priorities: Thunderbolts* feels more attentive to its characters than to escalating scale. It is not proof that the wider franchise has uniformly returned to form.

Do you need to watch other Marvel movies first?
The film draws on existing MCU characters, so prior familiarity adds context to their relationships. Still, its central premise—a group of antiheroes brought together for an uneasy mission—is understandable on its own. If you have not followed every character’s earlier appearances, focus on how they interact here rather than trying to fill in every piece of backstory.
Rating, runtime, and title
- Rating: PG-13. The Associated Press reports the Motion Picture Association descriptors as “strong violence, language, thematic elements, and some suggestive and drug references.”
- Runtime: 2h 6m on the Rotten Tomatoes film listing; check your local service’s listing if exact runtime matters.
- Title: Disney UK lists the film as Thunderbolts*, while Marvel’s current film page presents it as The New Avengers (2025). Both pages refer to the 2025 film, released May 2, 2025.
What the box office does—and does not—tell us
On May 4, 2025, the Associated Press reported a studio-attributed estimate of $76 million in domestic opening ticket sales. That is an opening-weekend figure, not the film’s final domestic or worldwide gross, and it cannot by itself establish that Marvel has recovered its former standing. Rotten Tomatoes and Metacritic maintain dynamic review pages; without a dependable, date-stamped score snapshot, a current numerical consensus should not be claimed.
Rank #4
Verdict: is Thunderbolts* worth watching?
It is a strong choice if you want an MCU film centered on a prickly ensemble, recognizable performances, and emotional conflict rather than a contest to stage the largest possible threat. Its freshness is real but bounded: familiar team-up mechanics remain, and its themes share space with humor and action. The film makes a credible case for Marvel at its best when character comes before scale, without proving that every part of the franchise is back at its peak.
