July 6, 2025, was the final scheduled operating day for Tom Sawyer Island and the Liberty Square Riverboat at Walt Disney World’s Magic Kingdom. Both attractions—and the Rivers of America area they were part of—were permanently closed beginning July 7, 2025, to make way for a planned Cars-themed Frontierland adventure.
What closed, and when?
The date in the original headline refers to the attractions’ last day of operation, not their first day closed. Disney-operated planDisney responses identified July 6, 2025, as the last scheduled day guests could experience Tom Sawyer Island and the Liberty Square Riverboat. The permanent closure began July 7.
- July 6, 2025: final scheduled operating day.
- July 7, 2025: permanent closure began.
The affected offerings were the Rivers of America, Tom Sawyer Island, and the Liberty Square Riverboat. These are historical closure dates; the former attractions are not presented as currently available experiences.
What were the attractions?
Tom Sawyer Island
Disney’s Magic Kingdom guide described the island as a “Mark Twain-inspired hideaway.” Its literary reference was to Mark Twain’s The Adventures of Tom Sawyer; that inspiration does not mean the attraction remains open.

Liberty Square Riverboat and Rivers of America
The guide described the Liberty Square Riverboat as a cruise aboard the Liberty Belle on the Rivers of America. Together with the island, the river setting formed the area affected by the closure.
Why did Disney close the area?
Disney announced in August 2024 that it would transform Rivers of America and Tom Sawyer Island to make way for a Cars-themed adventure in Frontierland. Michael Hundgen, then identified as Walt Disney World Portfolio Executive Producer, said: “We are thrilled to create this original Cars adventure and put our guests in the driver’s seat as we—quite literally—explore a new frontier in Frontierland.”

A later Disney update described the planned fictional setting as Piston Peak National Park. Disney said it was inspired by the Rocky Mountain region, American Frontier history, and national parks. These announcements establish the intended direction for the project, but do not by themselves establish an opening date or a current construction milestone.
Were there farewell activities on the final day?
In a June 23, 2025, planDisney response, Disney had not officially announced special farewell festivities for July 6. That dated answer does not establish whether informal activity took place or whether information changed later.
