Justin Bieber and Selena Gomez were publicly linked in late 2010, appeared together as a couple in 2011, and had an on-and-off relationship through the 2010s. Their first split was reported in November 2012; after later periods of renewed contact, they were seen together again in 2017 and early 2018. The public record establishes appearances and statements more firmly than it establishes the private reasons behind each separation.
How their public relationship began
The story became public in December 2010, when Gomez and Bieber were seen arm in arm at an IHOP in Philadelphia. Vogue recounts that Gomez described the outing as platonic at the time. That sighting marks the beginning of their public story, not proof of when a private relationship began. In January 2011, photographs of the pair kissing in St. Lucia appeared; the following month, they attended the Vanity Fair Oscar Party together. ABC News and Vogue identify the party as their public debut as a couple. Vogue’s timeline and ABC News’ account document these early milestones.
Why the relationship was described as on and off
The 2012 split and later contact
ABC News reported that the pair announced their first split in November 2012, with busy schedules cited as a reason. Vogue also mentions trust issues and their ages as rumored explanations, not confirmed causes. In 2013, they had renewed contact, including a kiss in Oslo reported by ABC News. Gomez said on Good Morning America: “He and I have had such a history together and I’ll always care about him and protect him if anybody tries to be mean.” Her statement conveys her expressed feelings, but it does not resolve the couple’s status at every point.
An uncertain status in 2014
Vogue describes 2014 as a confusing period in their relationship status. Gomez’s song “The Heart Wants What It Wants” was presented in coverage as connected to Bieber, but a song’s interpretation should not be treated as a definitive account of a relationship. Reflecting on her 2014 American Music Awards performance, Gomez later recalled feeling exhausted by the public focus: “Everybody was talking about the same thing: my relationship,” she told Elle. “I was so exhausted. I said, ‘I want this [performance] to be the last time I have to talk about this. And acknowledge this feeling.’”

Public exchanges in 2015 and 2016
Vogue reports that Bieber said some songs on his album Purpose were about Gomez. It also recounts public posts and an Instagram argument between the two. Some comments were later deleted, and the coverage included allegations; those exchanges establish that they aired tensions publicly, not that every allegation made online was true.
The reported 2017–2018 reunion
Vogue says Bieber and Gomez reconnected in October 2017 and were repeatedly seen together into early 2018. It also notes that neither had officially confirmed they were back together. In March 2018, reports described them as pausing the relationship. The most careful conclusion is that they had a widely reported reunion followed by reports of another pause—not a fully documented account of their private status or the reasons for the change.

What the public record can—and cannot—say
The chronology rests on a mix of public appearances, attributed interviews and press reports. A photograph or sighting can establish that two people were together in public; it cannot by itself confirm the terms of a relationship. Likewise, anonymous-source accounts and reported explanations should remain attributed rather than presented as the couple’s confirmed motives. Bieber, speaking to Oprah Winfrey in an interview quoted by ABC News, said: “I don’t keep her separate from me because I don’t ever want to make her feel like I’m ashamed of her.” That is a directly attributed statement about how he described the relationship, not an explanation for every breakup or reunion.
For chronology, Vogue’s March 2018 retrospective covers the later reported timeline, while ABC News’ April 2014 account provides earlier context and interview quotations. The ABC account predates the 2017–2018 reunion, so it does not cover that later period.
