In September 2024, Bloomberg reporting, as summarized by Thurrott, described Apple as narrowing broad theatrical campaigns for many original films—not abandoning theaters altogether. The reported strategy left room for one or two major theatrical releases. Apple’s later film-slate announcement and an executive’s 2026 comments show continuing film activity and interest in theatrical releases, but neither sets out a complete release plan for individual titles.
What the 2024 report said
On September 27, 2024, Thurrott summarized Bloomberg reporting that Apple was scaling back broad theatrical plans after some films underperformed at the box office. The reported change was about the scale and marketing of releases: many films would be promoted with streaming in mind, while Apple would retain the option of one or two major theatrical releases. It was not described as a total withdrawal from cinemas or as a blanket policy Apple formally announced. Thurrott’s summary of the Bloomberg report described Wolfs as shifting from an initially planned wide theatrical release to a limited theatrical run followed by availability on Apple TV.

What changed after that report
Apple’s 2026 film slate
Apple TV Press announced on February 3, 2026, a slate of original films expected to debut that year, including Outcome, The Dink, Mayday, Matchbox The Movie and Way of the Warrior Kid. The announcement confirms ongoing film production and releases; it does not establish the theatrical or streaming window for every film. Apple TV Press’s original-films announcement is the relevant source for the slate.
Apple’s stated interest in theaters
On June 24, 2026, Reuters reported that Apple executive Eddy Cue said the company aimed to release more and better content on its streaming service and in theaters. Speaking about F1, Cue said, “I think going theatrical did not hurt us with ’F1.’ People loved it when we brought it out on Apple TV and people loved it in the theater.” That comment signals continued interest in theatrical releases, but it is not a title-by-title commitment or a reversal of every element of the 2024 reported strategy. Reuters’ report on Cue’s comments.

What this means for viewers
The useful distinction is between a film’s release scale and where it eventually becomes available. A wide theatrical campaign, a limited cinema run and a streaming-first launch are different distribution choices; the 2024 report described Apple favoring streaming-oriented marketing for many films while preserving major event releases. A later appearance on Apple TV does not, by itself, show whether a film had a wide or limited theatrical run.
There is no complete 2026 title-by-title theatrical schedule in the cited Apple slate announcement or Cue’s remarks. Those sources do not establish each film’s territory, cinema window or streaming date. For a specific title, a confirmed release plan requires a title-specific announcement or reporting; the companywide statements are not enough to infer one.
