In a 2020 interview, Patty Smyth and John McEnroe described a relationship grounded in friendship, compromise, privacy and intimacy. They had met in 1993 and married in 1997; the interview looked back on their 23 years of marriage and the routines they shared during pandemic quarantine.

How Patty Smyth and John McEnroe met

Smyth and McEnroe met at a Christmas party in 1993, when both were navigating change. Smyth’s band Scandal had disbanded, and she was raising her daughter Ruby. McEnroe was preparing to retire from tennis and was separated from his then-wife, Tatum O’Neal.

They did not start dating immediately: their first date came eight months after they met. They married in 1997. The 2020 interview described them as having been married for 23 years.

What they said helped their relationship

Smyth pointed to friendship, compromise and privacy. When McEnroe prompted her to add another factor, she answered, “Sex. You’ve got to keep the sex going!” These were the couple’s reflections in one interview, not a formula or evidence that any particular habit guarantees a lasting marriage.

Why Smyth kept the relationship private

Smyth said she preferred to keep their relationship low-profile because she worried that publicly presenting themselves as a happy couple could bring bad luck. She also recalled preliminary conversations about doing a reality show and speculated that it might have broken them up.

Their family and everyday life in the 2020 interview

The interview placed their relationship in the context of a blended family. Smyth had daughters Ruby and Anna, and she and McEnroe had daughter Ava together. McEnroe also had children Kevin, Sean and Emily from his marriage to O’Neal.

During pandemic quarantine in Malibu, the couple said they read The New York Times together in the morning, played with their puppy and worked out. Those are details of their life as described in 2020, not a statement about their present-day routines.

The interview’s 26-year exchange

Although the interview framed the story around 23 years of marriage, the couple also joked about the longer span they had been together. McEnroe said, “One woman, 26 years.” Smyth replied, “One man, 26 years. That’s insane!” The figures were their own remarks in the interview, not an independent statistical finding.
