Patricia Routledge, the actor who made Hyacinth Bucket a television classic in the BBC sitcom Keeping Up Appearances, died on 3 October 2025, aged 96. Her agent’s statement, reported by ITV News, said she died peacefully in her sleep.

Her agent’s statement, quoted by ITV News, said: “We are deeply saddened to confirm the passing of Dame Patricia Routledge, who died peacefully in her sleep this morning, surrounded by love.” The statement describes the circumstances; it does not give a medical cause of death, and the reviewed reports do not establish one.
What was Patricia Routledge known for?
Routledge was best known to television audiences as Hyacinth Bucket—whose surname she insisted was pronounced “Bouquet”—in Keeping Up Appearances. The BBC sitcom turned the social-climbing, etiquette-obsessed character into one of British television’s most recognizable comic creations.

That role was a defining part of her screen career, but not the whole of it. She later played the title character in Hetty Wainthropp Investigates, and her work also encompassed theatre and musical theatre. The Guardian’s obituary places the sitcom alongside that broader stage and screen career.

Routledge’s stage work was substantial, spanning plays as well as musicals. Her screen roles brought her to a wide audience, while her theatre career showed the range behind the precise comic timing viewers saw in Keeping Up Appearances. The Parliamentary motion marking her contribution also records her death at 96.
For viewers revisiting her most famous television role, Keeping Up Appearances remains the clearest starting point. Routledge’s legacy, however, extends beyond that single character to a long career across stage and screen.
