Dwayne Johnson’s early WWE look was built around Rocky Maivia: a smiling, upbeat newcomer who debuted at Survivor Series in 1996. The change toward the sharper character who became The Rock followed a knee injury, a planned heel turn and a shift in how he presented himself. A useful photo gallery should show that evolution—not label every late-1990s image as a rookie-era picture.
How to read this visual timeline
The ten entries below are a sequence for selecting and captioning photographs, not ten verified image assets. The available historical accounts establish the career arc, but they do not verify ten distinct photographs, their exact dates or their reuse rights. Use images only after confirming each asset’s caption, event metadata, source credit and permission to publish.
-
Before the Rocky Maivia character
Begin with a verified early portrait or training-era photograph to establish Johnson as a young athlete. Call it a training photo only if the image archive’s caption confirms that context.
-
The Survivor Series debut
A Rocky Maivia entrance image can introduce the WWE debut, provided its metadata confirms the event. ESPN dates the debut to November 17, 1996, at Madison Square Garden; WWE’s biography also identifies Survivor Series 1996 as his debut event. ESPN’s Survivor Series retrospective and WWE’s biography provide the historical context.

Action from the debut match
For a match photograph confirmed as belonging to that event, explain that Johnson competed as Rocky Maivia and was on the surviving team. ESPN’s account says he eliminated Crush and Goldust. Do not assign that match context to an image without event-specific metadata.
-
The smiling babyface
A confirmed close-up can show the signature grin of the rookie presentation. Johnson told Fresh Air that WWE wanted him to smile so the crowd would see him as grateful for the opportunity. ESPN describes the character as overly positive and recounts the negative crowd response; that is a retrospective description, not a measured audience statistic.

-
Rocky Maivia’s ring attire
Use a portrait that clearly shows his early ring gear, and describe only details visible in that particular image. Appearance alone does not establish its date or event.
-
The Intercontinental Championship milestone
A verified championship photograph can mark how quickly Johnson rose after entering the ring. WWE says he won the Intercontinental Championship within months, but that statement does not establish the date or match for any particular image. Check an authoritative event record before adding either detail.

Alongside Rocky Johnson
A photograph with his father belongs here only when its caption or other reliable metadata identifies Rocky Johnson and the event. WWE’s biography says Rocky was often at his son’s side after Dwayne’s late-1996 debut.
-
The return and planned heel turn
A photograph from Johnson’s return or character change can mark the break from the original presentation, but date and identify it from official event metadata. Johnson said a knee injury preceded WWE’s plan to turn him heel.
-
The Nation of Domination era
An image with the Nation of Domination can show the transition toward a more forceful character. Use an official caption to establish the faction context and date; ESPN places the shift after the backlash to the cheerful rookie persona.
-
A later comparison—not a rookie photo
To show how far the presentation had evolved, a separately labeled later-career image can close the gallery. TIME’s retrospective credits a photograph of Johnson holding a championship belt at WrestleMania XV, at First Union Center in Philadelphia, on March 28, 1999. Photographer Steven E. Sutton is credited, with Duomo/Corbis. It is a comparison image, not a photograph from his 1996–97 rookie period; confirm current reuse rights with the rights holder before publication. TIME’s photo retrospective includes the caption.

What changed between Rocky Maivia and The Rock?
“Rocky Maivia” combined the names of Johnson’s father, Rocky Johnson, and his maternal grandfather, High Chief Peter Maivia. Johnson explained the name in his Fresh Air interview. WWE presented the newcomer as cheerful and grateful; after the character failed to connect as intended, an injury and planned heel turn helped set up a harder-edged identity. The key visual story is therefore a change in character presentation, not simply a progression from younger to older photographs.
Quick Recap
Choosing and captioning the images
- Confirm each photograph’s date, event, people and caption with its archive or rights holder.
- Keep historical context attached only to images whose metadata supports it; do not infer a specific match or year from appearance alone.
- Credit the photographer and image source as required, and verify publication rights before use.
- Label later images clearly so a 1999 comparison is not mistaken for a rookie-era picture.
