North West’s performance as young Simba at a 2024 Hollywood Bowl concert prompted online criticism of her singing and a wider debate about celebrity privilege. The response was not unanimous: some commenters objected to harshly targeting a child and argued that adults, not North, should be the focus of questions about access and casting. The event was a concert, not a Broadway musical production.
What happened at the Hollywood Bowl?
Disney announced on May 8, 2024, that North West would appear as a special guest at Disney’s The Lion King 30th Anniversary – A Live-to-Film Concert Event on May 24 and 25 at the Hollywood Bowl. It was a two-night anniversary concert, not a regular stage-musical engagement. Disney’s announcement described the event format and guest performers.

North performed “I Just Can’t Wait to Be King” as young Simba, alongside an orchestra and dancers, according to Teen Vogue’s coverage. Clips of the performance circulated online and drew criticism of her singing, along with discussion about whether celebrity connections affect who gets high-profile opportunities.
Why did the performance draw criticism?
Reactions to the singing
Some viewers criticized the performance itself after seeing clips. That describes a strand of online reaction; it does not establish a neutral or universal verdict on how the performance sounded. Social-media responses are selective, and the coverage does not establish that they represent all attendees or viewers.

The “nepo baby” debate
Other criticism focused on celebrity privilege and access: whether North’s family fame helped her receive a prominent role. Contemporary coverage, including Forbes and USA Today’s report syndicated by Yahoo, documented that debate. The sources do not verify claims that North paid for the role or that she displaced another child, so those allegations should not be treated as established facts.
Why did some people object to the backlash?
Alongside criticism of the performance and questions about access, commenters argued that directing harsh public criticism at a child was unfair. Others said scrutiny should fall on adults and institutions involved in offering and producing the opportunity, rather than placing responsibility on North. These are competing public reactions, not proof that the casting process was improper or that North was bullied in a legal or clinical sense. Yahoo’s contemporaneous coverage also reported on the response.

What did Kim Kardashian say about it?
In a February 2025 episode of The Kardashians, Kim Kardashian addressed the criticism. E! reported her saying, “North is very comfortable performing, but she’s not a singer.” That is Kardashian’s characterization, not an independent assessment of North’s ability. E! reported the remarks.
