How AEW connects the new title to wrestling history
AEW framed the championship as a tribute to an earlier National Championship associated with Georgia Championship Wrestling. Its November 5 announcement described that historic title as “once a top prize in Georgia Championship Wrestling” and said it had been retired in 1986 after unification with the United States Championship. That is AEW’s account of the lineage; the new AEW championship is a separate title with its own history.
