The safest approach is to use them as hints, check each domino against the actual board, and avoid treating the reported sequence as an official solution.
Confirm the puzzle date and difficulty
This guide is for the October 21, 2025 edition, identified by an independent archive as Pips puzzle #65. Open that date in NYT Pips and select Hard before using the clues below. This is not a guide to an October 21, 2026 puzzle.
The independent archive reports a 20-square Hard board with 10 dominoes and seven colored regions: four exact-sum regions, one greater-than region, one all-different region, and one region without a numerical condition. These are third-party descriptions, not an NYT answer key. EnergyPips’ October 21, 2025 archive entry says its boards are generated by its own engine and are not affiliated with The New York Times.
How to read the Hard-board clues
Pips asks you to place every available domino on the board so that each colored region satisfies its displayed condition. Dominoes can be rotated, and each half contributes its own pip value to the region it occupies. The game’s rules include exact sums, equal-value regions, and threshold conditions. For a general explanation, see Tom’s Guide’s Pips explainer.

The reported Hard-mode notes for October 21 associate these dominoes with the following conditions:
| Reported region condition | Reported domino clue |
|---|---|
| Less than 2 | 6–1, vertical |
| Total of 12 | 6–1, vertical; 6–2, horizontal |
| Total of 4 | 6–2 and 2–3, horizontal |
| All equal 3 | 2–3 and 3–5, horizontal |
| Greater than 9 | 3–5, horizontal; 5–0, vertical |
These are clue-level reports, not a complete board map. The domino notation gives the values on a tile; the orientation is reported, but the notes do not establish the exact squares or which half falls in which region. The reported threshold labels are also described as inconsistent. DocumentaryTube’s October 21 answer page warns that its reviewed answer text lacks sufficient board geometry for independent reconstruction.
Use the clues without assuming a full solution
- Start with the board’s printed conditions. Mark which regions need an exact total, matching values, a threshold, or distinct values. Do not infer a rule from a reported domino alone.
- Track each domino half separately. For each placement, note both pip values and the region receiving each half. A tile can affect two regions, so a plausible value in one region may make the other impossible.
- Check exact totals first. Compare the sum of the pips already in a region with its target. Reject a placement that exceeds the target or leaves too little value available to reach it.
- Apply threshold and repeat rules carefully. “Less than” and “greater than” conditions are not exact totals; equal-value and all-different conditions constrain whether values may repeat. Verify the wording shown on your board, especially for the reported threshold clues.
- Try the reported tile and orientation only where they fit. The notes associate 6–1 with the less-than-2 region vertically and with the 12-total region; they do not give coordinates. Treat that as a candidate to test, not a placement instruction.
- Recheck every region after each placement. Keep the placement only if both halves obey their respective region rules and the remaining dominoes can still fill the open squares.
What is and is not established about the answer
The October 21 answer material reports associations involving 6–1, 6–2, 2–3, 3–5, and 5–0 dominoes, along with the conditions in the table. It does not provide a dependable coordinate-by-coordinate sequence for all 10 dominoes. The archive and answer text therefore do not establish a full independently verifiable arrangement, nor do they establish that the reported placements are an official NYT solution.
Use the actual game board to verify any placement before treating it as solved. A physical domino set is not needed: the puzzle is played by placing the digital tiles on the NYT board.
