The bout remains a powerful case for calling it one of wrestling’s greatest: its three-fall structure turned a long rivalry into a clear story of setbacks, adaptation and triumph. But “best ever” is a judgment, not a settled fact.
What happened at Dominion 2018?
Okada and Omega met on June 9, 2018, at New Japan Pro-Wrestling’s Dominion event in Osaka. Their IWGP Heavyweight Championship match had no time limit and was contested under two-out-of-three-falls rules. NJPW’s pre-event announcement promoted the title match and its format.
Omega won two falls to one, ending Okada’s historic championship reign and taking the title. Contemporary coverage from Sports Illustrated reported the result and placed it in the context of Omega’s pursuit of the championship. Accounts differ on the reign’s precise length, so an exact day count is not necessary to understand the achievement.
How the three falls told the story
The format gave the match distinct phases: Okada established his advantage, Omega found an answer, and the final fall became a test of whether either man could land a decisive move. A detailed contemporary account by PWTorch describes the sequence.

- 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
- Okada takes the first fall. Omega avoided a Rainmaker attempt, but Okada caught him in a leverage pin.
- Omega ties the score. In the second fall, he hit the One-Winged Angel to even the match at one fall apiece.
- Omega wins the deciding fall. The final phase built through counters, signature-move attempts and visible exhaustion. Omega countered a Rainmaker attempt and finished Okada with the One-Winged Angel.
That progression makes the result feel earned rather than simply announced: Omega first had to recover from losing a fall, then survive Okada’s best-known route to victory in the deciding phase. The rules also made each fall a meaningful change in momentum instead of one long sequence with a single endpoint.
Why the victory mattered beyond the championship
The rivalry’s central question was whether Omega could get past an opponent who had beaten him repeatedly and establish himself at the top of NJPW. In Dave Meltzer’s retrospective account, Omega recognized Okada as the better wrestler while arguing for his own value as a performer and as an international face of the promotion. That tension gave the title chase a personal dimension: the contest was about proving he belonged at the summit as well as winning the belt.

The post-match choices carried the story into the celebration. Omega embraced the Young Bucks before receiving the championship, and PWTorch also described a reunion with the Young Bucks and Kota Ibushi. Those moments connected the win to friendship and perseverance, rather than treating the title change as the only emotional payoff. Sports Illustrated’s interview context also quotes Omega reflecting on putting the company’s interests first while pursuing his opportunity: “I think those are things always synonymous with a good team player.”
Why Dave Meltzer called it a seven-star match

It identifies the bout as a seven-star match in Meltzer’s rating system and quotes his reaction: “When it had ended, my thought was that this was the greatest match I’ve ever seen.” The judgment is Meltzer’s personal critical verdict, not an official result or an objective measure.

Is Okada vs. Omega 4 the best wrestling match ever?
There is no universal test that can settle the question. The strongest case for this match comes from how several elements work together: the falls create a legible escalation; Omega’s comeback answers the rivalry’s history; the deciding stretch makes exhaustion and counters part of the drama; and the post-match reunion gives the championship win personal weight.

A fair comparison with another match depends on what “best” means to you. You might prioritize a rivalry’s payoff, the architecture of the match, the performers’ execution and pacing, its emotional effect, or its historical importance. The available accounts support discussion of the first four for this bout, but they cannot establish a universal ranking. Calling it the best ever is defensible as a personal or critical judgment; calling it indisputably best is not.
