When did Catherine last attend a garden party?
At the May 8, 2026 event, Catherine and William greeted guests and spoke with them in the gardens of Buckingham Palace, according to ABC News. The couple’s previous garden party had been in May 2025. Fashion coverage identifies Catherine’s May 2025 appearance as her first garden party since June 2023, so the phrase “first time since 2023” describes that 2025 return, not the 2026 event.
What Catherine wore to the 2026 garden party
ABC News described a white, polka-dot skirt with a tailored white peplum jacket, black buttons and a three-dimensional floral detail. The look also included a black-and-white hat, pearl jewelry, nude pumps and a raffia clutch. Fashion coverage attributed the outfit to Self-Portrait; that identification comes from fashion reporting, not the Royal Family’s event guidance.
The Royal Family’s general dress guidance says women typically wear day dresses, often with hats or fascinators. National dress and uniforms are also common. For men, the guidance lists morning dress or lounge suits. These are general expectations for garden parties, not a dress code confirmed specifically for the 2026 gathering.

What a royal garden party is for
The Royal Family describes garden parties as a chance for members of the Royal Family to meet people who have made a positive contribution to their communities. Its official Garden Parties page says they are “an important way for members of the Royal Family to speak to a broad range of people from all walks of life, all of whom have made a positive impact in their community.”
The page explains that garden parties evolved from presentation parties into a way of “recognising and rewarding public service.” The gatherings are therefore not public ticketed events: guests are nominated through sponsors rather than applying directly to Buckingham Palace.

How invitations and the usual schedule work
The Royal Family’s guidance says sponsors around the country nominate guests. These can include Lord-Lieutenants, societies and associations, government departments, local government, the services and religious groups. The page says direct applications to Buckingham Palace are not a route to an invitation.
The traditional summer schedule described on the official page is three garden parties at Buckingham Palace and one at the Palace of Holyroodhouse in Scotland. It says more than 30,000 guests are invited over the course of the year. Separately, ABC News, citing the palace website, reports that approximately 10,000 guests are invited to each garden party. One figure covers the annual total; the other is an approximate per-event count.

The official page describes a typical event schedule: gates open around 3 p.m., with the party beginning at 4 p.m. Members of the Royal Family enter the garden as the National Anthem is played, then circulate among guest lanes and meet further guests at the Royal Tea Tent. Guests can stroll through the gardens and have food and drink. This is the general published format, not a minute-by-minute account of the May 2026 party.
