What the ranking measures—and what it does not
Filmarks calculated the order from its users’ star-score data. A score is the average rating, displayed on a five-point scale and rounded to two decimal places for ranking. “Marks” are the number of Filmarks reviews or ratings counted for a title; they are not points added to the score.
#1 Best Overall
That distinction explains why Black Butler: Emerald Witch Arc leads by average score with 948 Marks, while Medalist has the largest number of Marks in the top 10, at 7,269. A higher Mark count indicates more ratings counted on the platform, not a higher score or rank by itself.
- Not a viewership chart: The ranking reports user star ratings, not viewing hours, audience size, or streaming totals.
- Not a national poll: Filmarks does not describe the results as a representative survey of Japanese viewers.
- Not a critics’ list: The order comes from Filmarks user ratings, not a critics’ panel or sales figures.
How Filmarks calculated the ranking
The eligibility window was anime broadcast or streamed domestically in Japan from January 1 through June 30, 2025. Filmarks required at least 800 Marks as of July 4 and excluded one-off anime. Users rate titles on a five-point scale; the displayed score determined the order, with Mark count used to order titles tied on score.
Rank #2
The result is therefore a platform-specific ranking with a defined release window, threshold, and snapshot date—not a definitive ranking of every anime in Japan or a measure of what all viewers watched or preferred.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. Why this is a first-half snapshot, not a full-year ranking
The list was announced July 8, 2025, and covers only the first half of that year. A separate DMM TV ranking announced in February 2026 covers anime viewing on that service from January 1 through December 31, 2025. Because it measures viewing data on a different platform over a different period, it is not an update or correction to Filmarks’ rating order. [DMM TV’s 2025 annual ranking announcement]
