James Earl Jones, the acclaimed stage and screen actor whose resonant voice became inseparable from Darth Vader and Mufasa, died on September 9, 2024, at age 93. His longtime agent, Barry McPherson, confirmed the death to the Los Angeles Times; no cause was disclosed.
A career across stage, screen and voice acting
Jones was a versatile actor whose work ranged from Shakespearean tragedy to comedy, drama and some of cinema’s most recognizable voice performances. His breakthrough came onstage as boxer Jack Johnson in Howard Sackler’s The Great White Hope. He later earned acclaim in August Wilson’s Fences and took on Shakespearean roles including Othello, Hamlet and Lear.
His screen credits included Stanley Kubrick’s Dr. Strangelove, the baseball drama Field of Dreams, the comedy Coming to America and Cry, the Beloved Country. His career was never limited to voice work, even as that work brought him enduring recognition across generations.
The voice behind Darth Vader and Mufasa
Jones first voiced Darth Vader in Star Wars: A New Hope. Lucasfilm says he was cast in early 1977 and continued lending his voice to the character for more than four decades, across later films and television. The performance was controlled as well as powerful: Jones described the recording approach as keeping the voice “within very strict boundaries of inflection.”

He also voiced Mufasa in Disney’s The Lion King. Together, those roles made his voice familiar to audiences who might not have known the breadth of his stage and screen career.
Lucasfilm president Kathleen Kennedy called Jones “one of the most versatile and talented actors of our time, with an iconic body of work across film, stage and television.” George Lucas remembered him as “an incredible actor, a most unique voice both in art and spirit.”

Childhood, education and the path to acting
Jones was born on January 17, 1931, in Arkabutla, Mississippi. As the Los Angeles Times recounted, he experienced a childhood stutter and periods of silence. His high-school teacher Donald Crouch encouraged him to read aloud, an experience Jones later connected to finding his voice. He recalled, “If I hadn’t been a stutterer, I would never have been an actor.” That is Jones’s personal account, not a rule about stuttering or a formula for artistic achievement.
In his biography, Voices and Silences, written with Penelope Niven, Jones also reflected: “The desire to speak builds and builds until it becomes part of your life force.” He studied at the University of Michigan, earned a theater degree in 1955, served two years in the U.S. Army and then moved to New York to pursue acting. President Joe Biden later described him as “a proud Army veteran” who “served this country, influenced generations, and became one of the greatest actors of our time.”

Major awards and honors
Jones received major recognition in theater, television, music and film. The Television Academy records two Primetime Emmy wins, for Heat Wave and Gabriel’s Fire, from eight nominations. His honors also included two Tony Awards, a Grammy Award and an honorary Academy Award. The honorary Oscar matters: descriptions of Jones as an EGOT winner use the shorthand while counting an honorary, rather than competitive, Oscar.
His Tony Awards recognized The Great White Hope and Fences. He received Kennedy Center Honors in 2002. The range of awards reflected a career built on both live performance and screen work, while Vader and Mufasa carried his voice into popular culture on an extraordinary scale.
