James Gunn has not confirmed a third season of Peacemaker. In 2025, he said it was not the current plan, while leaving open the possibility of one later. A 2026 emoji response to a fan asking about season three was not an announcement. The confirmed news is older: DC renewed the series in 2022, and its second season premiered in August 2025.
Has James Gunn confirmed Peacemaker season 3?
No. The latest reported exchange does not establish a renewal. On August 30, 2026, CinemaBlend reported that Gunn replied with a thinking-face emoji to a fan asking whether there was a chance for season three. The outlet cautioned that the emoji was not proof or confirmation of a new season. It signals no definite production decision.

That distinction matters: a fan question and an ambiguous response are not the same as an official season order. The available reporting does not confirm a season three or name a specific next appearance for Peacemaker.
What Gunn said about a third season
In comments reported by MeriStation / AS and updated October 13, 2025, Gunn said a third season was not the current plan. The Spanish report quoted him: “No, se trata del Universo DC en general y de otras historias en las que se desarrollará ahora mismo. Eso no significa que no habrá. No quiero… nunca digas nunca. Pero ahora mismo, no. Se trata del futuro del Universo DC”. In editorial translation: “No, it’s about the DC Universe in general and other stories that will be developed right now. That doesn’t mean there won’t be [a third season]. I don’t want to… never say never. But right now, no. It’s about the future of the DC Universe.”

The wording, as published in Spanish, leaves the door open without promising a return. Gunn framed his immediate focus around the wider DC Universe and other stories in development, rather than announcing another Peacemaker season. The quoted wording here is an editorial translation of the Spanish report, not an independently verified English transcript. Read the MeriStation / AS report.
Season two is already out
DC announced the season-two renewal on February 16, 2022—not in response to the recent season-three question. In that announcement, Gunn said, “I can’t wait for folks to see where Team Peacemaker goes in Season Two!” DC’s renewal announcement also said Gunn would write and direct all episodes.

Warner Bros. Discovery announced that season two debuted August 21, 2025. Its release says Gunn wrote all eight episodes and directed three, including the first. Warner Bros. Discovery’s release identifies the series as a Max original; viewing availability can vary by country and over time.

Gunn’s reported comments connect his immediate plans to the wider DC Universe, and the 2026 emoji exchange has prompted renewed speculation. But neither establishes that John Cena’s character has a confirmed role in another project, nor that a third season is in development. A character’s possible place in a broader universe and a formally ordered season are separate questions; the available reports answer neither with a confirmed next project.
