Across interviews and television appearances from 2015 to 2023, she described being happier on her own. These are several documented remarks, not an exhaustive record of everything she has ever said on the subject.
2015: Goldberg said relationships require ongoing give and take
In a 2015 Good Morning America conversation with Robin Roberts about her book If Someone Says ‘You Complete Me,’ Run!: Whoopi’s Big Book of Relationships, Goldberg discussed why marriage is not for everyone and the value of understanding what makes you happy. The Washington Post reported her describing the work of relationships this way:
“For me, I came to understand that, you know, relationships require a day to day, minute to minute, hour to hour, day to day give and take.”
She added: “I’m not interested in that. I don’t want to do it.” Her point was about what she wanted for herself, not a rule for other people. The Washington Post’s report on the interview also describes the book as addressing the satisfactions of being alone.
2016: She preferred independence and did not want to share a home
In a 2016 interview with The New York Times, as reported by The Independent, Goldberg said she was “much happier on my own.” She explained that she could spend time with someone when she wanted, but was not seeking to be with someone forever or live together. She also said: “I’m the round peg, and marriage is the square hole.”
The Independent highlighted another concise expression of that preference: “I don’t want somebody in my house.” The remarks leave room for companionship on her terms; they do not amount to a rejection of all relationships. The Independent’s account reports these comments from the 2016 interview.

2019: She connected marriage to expectations and conformity
A 2023 Independent retrospective reports Goldberg’s comments from a 2019 New York Times interview about the pressure she felt to follow a conventional path:
“Look, people expect you to have a boyfriend. They expect you to get married.”

Goldberg said she felt dissatisfied and frustrated when she did not experience the feelings she thought she was supposed to have. She recalled realizing: “I don’t have to do this. I don’t have to conform.” The retrospective also reports her saying she did not want to share information with another person or have to make that person feel better. In her account, the problem was not that everyone should avoid marriage; it was that she had been trying to meet expectations that did not match what she wanted. The Independent retrospective points to the 2019 interview.
2023: She recalled feeling relieved after each divorce
On The View, while the hosts were discussing another person’s separation, Goldberg recalled her own reaction after divorce: “I was dancing and prancing around, I was so glad to get out of there.” Asked whether she felt that way each time, she replied: “Every time, every time.”
The Independent reports Goldberg saying she knew she did not want to marry but did it anyway, trying to make “a round hole go into a square peg.” She also said: “I kept doing what everyone kept saying I was supposed to do,” adding that it was “getting expensive and boring.” These comments connect her earlier description of social pressure with her later recollection of the marriages themselves. The Independent’s 2023 report covers the television discussion and her earlier remarks.
