Clint Eastwood’s claim was allowed to proceed on appeal; Dustin Hoffman won a judgment over a manipulated fashion spread; Katherine Heigl’s dispute with a retailer was reportedly settled. Those outcomes are not interchangeable, and the available case-level material does not substantiate ten distinct profiles.
What “wrongful image use” means in these cases
“Wrongful image use” is a broad description, not one uniform legal claim. Depending on the facts, a dispute may involve the right of publicity, commercial appropriation, false endorsement, or a statutory likeness claim. The central issue in the examples below is whether a person’s identity was used commercially without permission; a photograph is only one possible part of that identity.
The legal boundary depends on context. A celebrity’s image used to promote a separate product can raise different issues from a photograph appearing in an editorial story. A lawsuit or favorable procedural ruling also does not, by itself, establish that a court ultimately found liability.
Three cases with case-level detail
Clint Eastwood: a magazine cover and promotional broadcasts
The National Enquirer used Eastwood’s name, photograph, or likeness on a publication cover and in related promotional broadcasts alongside a false but nondefamatory story. Eastwood alleged that this amounted to commercial exploitation under California common law and Civil Code section 3344. The California Court of Appeal concluded that he had sufficiently alleged claims to proceed; it did not decide that he had won a final trial judgment. Read the appellate opinion.

Dustin Hoffman: a manipulated fashion spread
Los Angeles Magazine used Hoffman’s name and likeness in a manipulated fashion spread promoting designer clothing and the magazine. The U.S. District Court for the Central District of California found the use unauthorized and awarded damages. It assessed the fair-market value of this one-time endorsement use at $1,500,000 and also awarded punitive damages. That is a case-specific judicial valuation, not a general rate for celebrity image use.

Katherine Heigl: a retailer’s social-media post
ABA course materials recount that Heigl sued Duane Reade in 2014 after the retailer posted an image of her carrying one of its bags with promotional copy. The materials say she brought false-endorsement and publicity claims. They report that the dispute settled after the posts were removed and a contribution was made to a charity she endorsed. This is a reported settlement account in professional course materials, not a court finding. See the ABA course materials.
Why a list of ten would overstate what is established
A 2024 congressional hearing summary names Thomas Edison, Fred Astaire, Vanna White, Bette Midler, Tom Waits, Kareem Abdul-Jabbar, and Michael Jordan as people who prevailed in lawsuits or related settlements involving unauthorized uses of names, likenesses, jersey numbers, or voices. The summary does not give case-level details for each person, so it cannot establish the specific facts, legal theory, or outcome needed for an individual case profile. Other decisions are related but not straightforward examples of a living celebrity suing over an unauthorized advertisement. The Ninth Circuit’s Monroe litigation concerned ownership of posthumous publicity rights and commercial use and sale of photographs. Michael Olive’s case involved his likeness in GNC advertising and appellate review of profit apportionment, expert evidence, and prevailing-party issues; the trial court found neither side had prevailed. Irina Krupnik, a former model, sued over a photograph shown in a brochure in the film Couples Retreat, asserting a New York statutory likeness claim and other causes. Those matters require their own procedural and factual qualifications rather than being counted as uncomplicated wins.

Using a celebrity’s identity to advertise or promote another product or service is a common setting for publicity-rights and appropriation claims, but the legal boundaries remain fact-dependent. A claim does not always require an explicit statement that the person endorses the product: Eastwood’s case involved a story and its promotion, not a conventional ad in which he endorsed the publication. A 2021 federal order describes the right of publicity as protecting celebrities’ commercial interest in their identities while also discussing limits on the right. Read the 2021 order.

The examples also illustrate why the outcome matters as much as the allegation. Eastwood’s appellate ruling addressed whether his claims could proceed; Hoffman received a judgment and damages award; Heigl’s result is described as a reported settlement. They are different procedural endpoints, not interchangeable proof that every disputed use is unlawful.
