You can read many ebooks without paying per title: borrow them from a participating public library, use Kindle-compatible library loans in the U.S., download eligible older books from Project Gutenberg, or borrow selected digitized books through Open Library. “Free” may mean a temporary loan, not a permanent download, and not every current ebook is available at no cost.
1. Borrow ebooks from your public library with Libby
If your library uses OverDrive, you can borrow its digital books through Libby with a library card. Libby describes itself as a free app for enjoying ebooks, digital audiobooks, and magazines from a public library; the app and library content have no subscription costs, in-app purchases, or late fees. Libby Help Center
- Get a library card from a participating library, if you do not already have one.
- Install Libby or open Libby in a supported browser, then find and add your library.
- Sign in with your library card, search the catalog, and borrow an available title.
- Read in Libby on a supported phone, tablet, or browser. The book returns automatically on its due date.
Your library chooses its own digital catalog and sets loan periods and borrowing limits, so selection and availability depend on where you have a card. A title that is checked out may not be immediately available.
2. Send eligible U.S. library loans to a Kindle
For participating U.S. public libraries, some ebooks borrowed through Libby or the library’s OverDrive website can be sent to a compatible Kindle e-reader. Kindle Books are available through this route for U.S. libraries only, and not every title is offered in Kindle format. OverDrive Help: Kindle Books

Choose a Kindle option only when it appears for the borrowed title, then follow the prompts to deliver the loan to your device. This is a reading option for an eligible library loan, not a requirement to buy an ebook or a Kindle: Libby also works on supported phones, tablets, and browsers.
3. Download older free ebooks from Project Gutenberg
Project Gutenberg is especially useful for older works whose U.S. copyright has expired. You can read books in a browser or download available files in formats such as EPUB. Its catalog displayed 79,557 free ebooks on October 8, 2026; the count changes over time. Project Gutenberg
Rank #2
- Our fastest Kindle Paperwhite ever – The next-generation 7“ Paperwhite display has a higher contrast ratio and 25% faster page turns.
- Ready for travel – The ultra-thin design has a larger glare-free screen so pages stay sharp no matter where you are.
- Escape into your books – Your Kindle doesn’t have social media, notifications, or other distracting apps.
- Battery life for your longest novel – A single charge via USB-C lasts up to 12 weeks.
- Read in any light – Adjust the display from white to amber to read in bright sunlight or in the dark.
Free availability in the catalog is not a universal determination of a book’s copyright status. Project Gutenberg’s license notes that some works are included with permission, that catalog information about restrictions can be wrong, and that users outside the United States should check local law. Check the license inside the ebook and the rules that apply where you live before using a title.

Open Library, a project of the Internet Archive, lets readers borrow selected digitized books supplied by the Internet Archive and participating libraries. Depending on the title, reading may be available in BookReader and often as a PDF or EPUB. This is lending, not an unlimited catalog of permanent free downloads. Open Library borrowing FAQ
