The result is a lively, sincere reset built around compassion rather than a retelling of how Clark Kent got his powers. It is an inviting entry point for newcomers and a welcome tonal shift for viewers ready to see the hero’s optimism treated as a strength.
A fresh start without another origin story
Written and directed by Gunn, Superman is the first DC Studios feature to reach theaters. David Corenswet plays Clark Kent and Superman, Rachel Brosnahan is Lois Lane, and Nicholas Hoult is Lex Luthor. Rather than spend its opening act revisiting Kansas, the film begins after Superman has already suffered his first defeat, as the Associated Press described it on July 13, 2025. That choice gives the story room to test the hero’s values under pressure instead of asking audiences to sit through another account of his beginnings.

It also makes the film a practical starting point: viewers do not need a catalogue of previous DC movies to understand who Superman is or what is at stake for him. Gunn’s approach is less about erasing the character’s history than about establishing a new screen version on its own terms.
Hope is the point—and the real test
DC’s official description emphasizes compassion, belief in human goodness, action, humor, and heart. Those are the studio’s stated aims, not a guarantee that a film will make them land. Gunn’s central gamble is that Superman’s goodness can feel compelling without being treated as naïveté. The film is most distinctive when it lets kindness function as a choice with consequences, rather than as a slogan attached to a familiar symbol.

That emphasis gives the movie a different center of gravity from a Superman story defined chiefly by the scale of its destruction or the burden of its power. Its action and humor keep the pace buoyant, while its emotional argument rests on whether decency still matters when the world is difficult. The balance is the film’s clearest refresh: it lets spectacle serve a humane hero, not replace him.
The supporting cast widens the world
Corenswet gives this version a Clark and Superman to build around, while Brosnahan’s Lois and Hoult’s Lex establish the two most important relationships in his orbit. The wider ensemble—including Edi Gathegi, Anthony Carrigan, Nathan Fillion, Isabela Merced, and Skyler Gisondo—signals a DC world that is already populated beyond the central trio. That makes the movie feel less like a solitary character study and more like the opening of a broader franchise, without requiring the audience to know every face in advance.
For a reboot, that is a useful balance: the world can feel larger than Superman while the story remains legible as his. The film’s success as a fresh start depends less on how many familiar names it introduces than on whether its central idea—an unusually powerful person choosing to care—remains the reason to follow him.
How the film landed at release
The opening-period numbers suggest the film arrived with substantial audience interest, but they are historical snapshots rather than current measures of its standing. The Associated Press reported an estimated $122 million in US and Canadian opening-weekend ticket sales, an 82% Rotten Tomatoes score at the time of publication, and an A- CinemaScore in its July 13, 2025 report. The box-office estimate covered one opening weekend; the critic score can change, and the CinemaScore was an opening-period audience grade. None of those figures settles whether the film’s hopeful approach works for an individual viewer.

Who should watch it
This is a strong pick for viewers who want Superman to feel warm, energetic, and accessible rather than weighed down by a long continuity checklist. The film’s appeal is especially clear if you are interested in a version that treats optimism as an active response to hardship. If you prefer a darker, more solemn take on the character, Gunn’s mixture of action, humor, and earnestness may be less to your taste.
Superman opened in international markets from July 9, 2025, and in US theaters and IMAX on July 11, 2025; those dates are now past.
