A camouflage cap turned into an instant meme after Minnesota Gov. Tim Walz wore one in the video announcing his place on Kamala Harris’s 2024 ticket. Chappell Roan’s fans recognized a resemblance to her “Midwest Princess” merchandise; Roan’s repost of the two hats helped propel the comparison into the political news cycle.
What happened on August 6, 2024?
Harris posted a video of a phone call asking Walz to join her campaign as her running mate. Walz appeared in a T-shirt, khakis, white sneakers and a camouflage baseball cap. The relaxed outfit stood out in a high-profile political announcement—and the hat quickly drew attention.
Roan had been selling camouflage caps marked “Midwest Princess.” After Walz joined the ticket, the campaign sold a similar-looking cap marked “Harris Walz.” Roan reposted a side-by-side comparison that Tuesday with the caption, “Is this real[?]” The resemblance, and her amused reaction, gave the image an easy-to-grasp punchline. WIRED’s August 9, 2024 account traces the moment and its immediate spread.
Why did the comparison become a meme?
Two recognizable worlds met in one image
The joke worked because the hats appeared to connect campaign merchandise with a pop-culture reference familiar to Roan’s fans. People did not need a long explanation: a side-by-side image made the visual overlap legible, while Roan’s caption supplied the reaction. The moment invited people to pass along the image and add their own interpretation.

The jokes made the collision feel bigger
Comedians and commentators extended the joke beyond the two caps. Desus Nice called it “This is the Bushwick x Los Feliz unity our nation needs.” Wall Street Journal tech columnist Christopher Mims described Roan’s post as “some kind of Gen Z inception.” Those were playful reactions, not evidence of an organized campaign strategy or a measured effect on voters.
What did the camo cap mean politically?
The cap also entered a political conversation about symbols and clothing. WIRED compared its possible role with the red MAGA hat, an item already strongly associated with Donald Trump’s movement. The comparison was about how a simple hat can become shorthand for political identity; it does not mean the two hats carried identical meanings or had equal influence.

Walz’s casual outfit prompted another reading: that clothing perceived as ordinary or unpolished could signal approachability. In Politico, Menswear Guy Derek Guy called casual clothing a “political boon.” That is commentary on how appearance may be interpreted, not proof that voters responded a particular way. WIRED considered possible meanings for the look, but did not establish that the cap was selected to win Roan’s endorsement. It also reported that a Roan representative did not respond to a request for comment and did not report a confirmed endorsement.
How many hats sold?
The sales figures were reported during the 2024 campaign and should be read as historical, attributed numbers—not as audited totals, current availability, or evidence that the meme persuaded voters.

- Roan merchandise: WIRED relayed Teen Vogue colleagues’ reporting that 3,000 caps initially made sold out in 30 minutes.
- Campaign merchandise: WIRED reported that the Harris campaign later told Teen Vogue 47,028 Harris-Walz hats had sold, bringing in $1,878,524. That was a campaign-reported figure, not an independently audited count.
Why did the meme outlast the outfit’s first appearance?
The cap was both a real object and a compact visual joke. The physical hats could remain personal keepsakes after the news-cycle meme faded; the available reporting does not measure how long the joke circulated or what political impact it had. What made the moment distinctive was the overlap: a candidate’s casual clothing, a pop star’s recognizable merchandise, and a post that put the resemblance on screen.
