Heidi Klum’s dramatic pink Elie Saab gown appeared to test Cannes Film Festival’s 2025 restriction on voluminous outfits and long trains. But reports do not establish that festival officials formally ruled she had violated the code. The concern was the gown’s size and train—not the separate rule against nudity.
What Heidi Klum wore at Cannes in 2025
Klum walked the opening-ceremony red carpet for the 78th Cannes Film Festival on May 13, 2025, in a pink Elie Saab gown. Reports described layered, floral-like fabric, a high slit and a long train. The National reported that the train extended at least two metres along the carpet (The National, May 14, 2025).
The train and the gown’s volume prompted comparisons with a dress-code update announced shortly before the festival. Coverage framed the look as appearing to test or conflict with that restriction; it did not establish that Klum intended to challenge the rules.
What Cannes’ 2025 dress-code update said
The National reproduced the festival charter’s wording: “For decency reasons, nudity is prohibited on the red carpet, as well as in any other area of the festival. Voluminous outfits, in particular those with a large train, that hinder the proper flow of traffic of guests and complicate seating in the theatre are not permitted.”

The provisions addressed two different issues: nudity and clothing whose volume or train interfered with guest movement or theatre seating. The comparison involving Klum’s gown concerned the latter. The Guardian reported that the rules applied to evening screenings at the Grand Théâtre Lumière (The Guardian, May 16, 2025).
Cannes press officers told Euronews that the festival had “made explicit in its charter certain rules that have long been in effect.” They also said: “The aim is not to regulate attire per se, but to prohibit full nudity on the red carpet, in accordance with the institutional framework of the event and French law” (Euronews, May 13, 2025).

Did Klum formally break the rules?
That is not established by the available reporting. The AP’s May 13 account said enforcement remained unclear, even as several voluminous gowns appeared at the opening ceremony (Associated Press, May 13, 2025). Reports do not document a formal finding that Klum violated the code or an access penalty imposed on her. Nor do they establish her intent.
So “nearly breaks” is best understood as a description of how the gown appeared in relation to the new practical restriction, not as confirmation of an official ruling.

Why the 2025 date matters
This story concerns the 2025 festival edition. A 2026 guide notes that the 2025 clause on voluminous outfits was not repeated as explicitly in 2026 (Vanity Fair, May 12, 2026). That does not establish what requirements apply at every later edition; anyone relying on the rules for a future festival should check that edition’s applicable charter.
