In a PEOPLE interview conducted before Gypsy Rose Blanchard’s December 28, 2023 release from prison, she and Ryan Anderson discussed their marriage and the public attention they expected to face. Anderson said they planned to check in with each other every night. That interview describes their outlook at the time—not their present relationship: E! reported in June 2024 that they had separated.
What Blanchard and Anderson said before her release
The PEOPLE conversation took place before Blanchard left prison on December 28, 2023. In the interview, the couple spoke about beginning life together outside prison and anticipating sudden attention from the public. Their comments reflect what they expected and planned at that moment.
Anderson described the shift as daunting: “Now it’s kind of like, ‘Oh, you’re in the public eye now — go out there and experience it,’” he said, as quoted in Yahoo News’ January 8, 2024 republication of PEOPLE’s reporting by Nicole Acosta and Janine Rubenstein. He also described a plan to make time for private conversation: “But we’ve decided that every night, we’re going to lay in bed, we’re going to talk to each other and check on each other and see how we’re doing, because it is going to be crazy for a minute.” Read the syndicated PEOPLE interview at Yahoo News.
The nightly check-in was Anderson’s stated intention, not a general claim about how couples manage public attention. The interview excerpt attributes these remarks to him but does not establish a fuller professional title.

How their relationship began and when they married
In the PEOPLE interview, Anderson said he began writing to Blanchard in 2020 after a coworker mentioned writing to Joe Exotic. He said he did not expect that Blanchard would become his wife. The couple married while she was incarcerated; Entertainment Tonight dates their prison ceremony to July 2022. Entertainment Tonight’s December 28, 2023 report covered her release and the wedding.
What changed after the interview
The pre-release interview should not be read as a description of the couple’s current status. On June 6, 2024, E! News reported that Blanchard and Anderson had separated. In that report, Anderson said he was still processing the breakup; it presents his perspective and does not establish every reason for the separation. Read E!’s June 2024 report.

The later documentary context is Gypsy Rose: Life After Lock Up, which Hearst Networks EMEA described in 2024 as an eight-part series following Blanchard after release, including her first move in with Anderson. The series offers a separate account of post-release life; it is not the same source as the pre-release PEOPLE interview. See Hearst Networks’ series description.
