Christopher Nolan’s The Odyssey is a released adaptation of Homer’s epic, not an upcoming film. Universal’s official page lists its theatrical release date as July 17, 2026. Written and directed by Nolan, the mythic action epic stars Matt Damon as Odysseus and brings the ancient story to the screen through a large-scale production shot entirely with IMAX cameras, according to Universal.

In an interview with The Associated Press, Nolan said his team studied Greek mythology, Bronze Age scholarship and multiple translations. He also said the film draws on material from The Iliad, The Aeneid and Agamemnon to make the story clearer for audiences. The filmmakers’ research and historical texture should not be mistaken for proof that the movie reconstructs antiquity accurately.

What choices shape Nolan’s adaptation?
Nolan told the AP that he wanted to challenge assumptions about how antiquity should look and sound in movies. The AP reported choices including colloquial language and American accents, alongside an earthy quality Nolan sees in Homer’s text rather than only the grandeur often associated with ancient-world cinema. These are artistic decisions, not objective corrections to Homer or evidence that the film’s world is historically exact.

The adaptation also has to make a sprawling poem legible as a feature film. Nolan’s reported use of episodes and material from other ancient works reflects that aim. Readers who want to compare the movie with Homer’s poem should keep in mind that translations differ and that the filmmakers consulted multiple versions; no single translation is identified as the film’s source.
How was the film made?
Universal said The Odyssey was the first feature shot entirely with IMAX cameras and announced a worldwide IMAX opening for July 17, 2026. That “first” description is the studio’s claim. The all-IMAX-camera production fact does not establish that an IMAX screening is currently available in any particular location.
The AP reported a 91-day shoot spanning six months and six countries, following months of scouting. The production finished nine days early. Its reported locations included Morocco for Troy, Greece for the Cyclops’ cave, Iceland for Hades and Favignana near Sicily for Ithaca. The production combined real settings and practical work with visual effects for elements that could not be found in the natural world.
A notable practical element was the Draken, a real ship described by the AP as a reconstruction of a 1,000-year-old Viking ship that was modified to evoke a Mycenaean-era vessel. Cast members learned to row. The ship’s Viking origins and adaptation for the production are important context: it was a filmmaking choice, not a surviving Mycenaean ship.

These figures have different dates and contexts. The opening receipts are estimates from the film’s first weekend, while Universal’s September announcement gives a later global total and a separate weekend estimate.

Who made the film?
Christopher Nolan wrote and directed The Odyssey. Emma Thomas and Nolan produced it for Syncopy, and Thomas Hayslip was executive producer, according to Universal. Nolan described it to the AP as “the ultimate adventure story.”
Where can viewers find it now?
Universal lists July 17, 2026 as the film’s theatrical release date. That date has passed, but the available information does not establish current local screening schedules or a physical home-video release. Check local listings or the distributor’s current channels for availability in your area; an announced IMAX production format alone does not guarantee a local IMAX showtime.
